RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond football team jumps out of conference play this weekend as the Spiders travel to the Empire State Saturday to take on Fordham from the Patriot League. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Jack Coffey Field in the Bronx.
The game will be video streamed online on the Patriot League Network with links available at www.richmondspiders.com. Additionally, the game will be broadcast on ESPN Richmond 99.5 FM/950 AM and online via TuneIn with Bob Black, Chris Anderson and Matt Smith on the call.
Richmond enters Saturday's game well rested as the Spiders had their bye week last week in the fourth week of the year. The Spiders have had success recently in games immediately after their bye weeks, posting a 10-4 record in the week after being off since 2005. The Spiders are 6-3 at home when playing after a bye and are 4-1 on the road after the off week. Richmond will be playing a road game after the bye week for the first time since the 2014 season when it traveled to Lynchburg and defeated Liberty 46-39 in double overtime. Last year, the Spiders dropped a 45-21 contest at home to Villanova after their bye week. Additionally, the Spiders' bye week in week four is the earliest in a season since the 2010 season when the Spiders had a bye in week two, returning to a win over Elon in overtime.
Saturday's game marks the third meeting all-time between Fordham and Richmond. The Spiders are 1-0-1 all-time against the Rams, including a 52-7 victory last season at home at Robins Stadium. The Spiders out-gained the Rams 585-188 in their home opener last season. Richmond passed for 302 yards and rushed for 283 yards. Joe Mancuso (Blairsville, Ga.) rushed for 67 yards on six carries while running back Devin Campbell (Yorktown, Va.) had 38 yards on seven carries. The Spiders' defense intercepted three passes and sacked the Rams five times in the victory. Defensive lineman Colby Ritten (Orlando, Fla.) led the way with 2.0 sacks while Gershom Ejoni (Raleigh, N.C.), Maurice Jackson (Levittown, Pa.) and Kobie Turner (Clifton, Va.) each added 1.0 sacks. Saturday's game marks the first visit for the Spiders to the Bronx since 1995 when the teams met and played to a 3-3 tie.
Richmond enters Saturday's game ranking first in the Colonial Athletic Association and third in the nation in completion percentage at 76.7 percent (56-of-73). Redshirt sophomore quarterback Beau English (Stevenson, Md.) leads the way at 94.7 percent, connecting on 18-of-19 through the air this year. His 94.7 percent ranks first in the NCAA this season in limited action. He was 3-of-3 against Jacksonville, 8-of-9 against Boston College and 7-of-7 against Elon. Additionally, Mancuso has connected on 69.2 percent (36-of-52) through the air while Andrew Tsangeos (Pasadena, Calif.) and Isaac Brown (Winchester, Va.) have each gone 1-of-1 through the air as receivers.
Graduate transfer wide receiver Keyston Fuller (Griffin, Ga.) had a breakout performance in the Spiders loss to No. 25 Elon. Fuller caught seven passes for a career-high 208 yards and a touchdown against the Phoenix. The 208 yards receiving are tied for fourth most in a single game in Spider history with Leland Melvin and is the most for a Spider since John Henry recorded 214 yards receiving September 13, 1986 at Massachusetts. In fact, Fuller is just the seventh Spider in program history to eclipse the 200-yard mark in a single game. The Richmond receiving record is held by Walker Gillette with 264 yards at Mississippi State in 1969.
