GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Facing a field of some of the top programs in collegiate golf, the Richmond Spiders held their own in the first round of the Lady Paladin Invitational at Furman Golf Club on Friday. The Spiders stayed near the top of the leaderboard for much of the day before fading a bit on the back nine, ending the day tied for eighth in the 16-team field at 300 (+12).

"I am so proud of this group," said coach Calle Nielson. "After nine holes we were up there with the top teams in the country. I hope this gives our team a lot of confidence because this is a group that has the skill to compete at this level."

A string of birdies early in their round had the Spiders as low as two-under par and atop the team leaderboard early in the round. At the turn, Richmond was three-over par. The Spiders played the back nine in a combined nine-over par to finish at 300 (+12).

Sophomore Naomi Mitchell and freshman Vicky Zhu are the top two Spiders on the individual leaderboard at 73 (+1), tied for 15th in the field of 90.

Richmond will resume play Saturday morning at 9:00 AM.
