Spiders Secure Home Win Against Fordham, 1-0
09/29/2019 | Women's Soccer
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team scored in the sixth minute and made it stand up in a key 1-0 win against Fordham Sunday afternoon at the President's Field at River Road.
The Spiders (5-4-2, 2-1 A-10) took a 1-0 lead after junior TJ Anderson (Peachtree Corners, Ga.) played a nice ball to teammate Brooke Beam (Dagsboro, Del.) who fired a shot into the lower right of the net at the 5:24 mark.
"Gutsy performance by our team," head coach Marty Beall said. "I thought in the first half we played really well, created some good chances and defended well. In the second half, Fordham upped their intensity level pushing players forward and we had to make adjustments. I couldn't be more proud of how we fought through all that adversity. It is a great win and a great three points in conference play."
Both teams finished the first half with six shots apiece but Richmond held a 1-0 lead off the goal from Beam.
The Rams came out aggressive in the second half putting nine shots on net, including a couple of close chances. The Spider defense played extremely well with a lot of blocked shots and clearances to keep Fordham off the scoreboard. The main four on the back line helped contribute to the shutout in freshmen Taylor Fine (San Diego, Ca.), Gianna Lucchesi (Hamilton, N.J.), Molly Morgan (Upper Arlington, Ohio) and Evyn Magenbauer (Salem, Va.).
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Jessica Stanfill (Fitzgerald, Ga.) made three saves but redshirt freshman Claire Hinkle (Tipp City, Ohio) was forced into action and made the biggest save of the game. In the 79th minute, Fordham's Kristen Cocozza took a shot inside the box but Hinkle came out and got a foot on the ball to keep the game tied. The two keepers combined for the shutout.
Richmond will head out on the road for a A-10 matchup against Duquesne on Thursday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m.
