Keppel’s OT Goal Lifts Spiders To 3-2 Win Over Bucknell
09/08/2019 | Field Hockey
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Freshman defender Tess Keppel scored her first career goal just over two minutes into the first sudden death overtime period to lift the Spiders to a 3-2 win over Bucknell on a hot afternoon at Crenshaw Field.
This was the second-straight home opening win for the Spiders, as they took down Patriot League foe Lafayette last season, 4-2.
After a scoreless first quarter that saw the Spiders outshoot the Bison, 6-1, Richmond was able to get on the board off sophomore Addie Nash's second goal of the season just over two minutes into the second period. Freshman Lindsey Frank assisted Nash on the play.
Despite a 4-2 advantage in shots in the second frame, including a penalty stroke that was saved by junior goalkeeper Frankie-Lynne Conklin, the Bison were unable to score and the Spiders took the one-goal advantage into halftime.
Bucknell pressured early in the third quarter, scoring to tie things up with just over five minutes to play in the period, and took its first lead of the game just 1:37 into the fourth quarter off a penalty corner shot.
After going down 2-1, the Spiders rallied, as Abra Granger tipped in Jessica Hendry's shot off a corner to tie the game with less than five minutes remaining in regulation. After 60 minutes of play, neither team was able to pull away, sending the Spiders and Bison into overtime for the second-straight season.
The lone shot in overtime came from Keppel, who was waiting on the far post to tap in the game-winner off a pass from senior Elise Zwicklbauer. This was the first overtime win for the Spiders since taking down Lock Haven in 2017, 2-1.
The Spiders outshot the Bison, 15-12, while the Bison held an 11-9 edge in corners. Conklin finished with five saves in goal.
The Spiders return to action on Friday, September 13, when they travel to take on another Patriot League team in Lehigh. The third-ever meeting between the two teams is set for 4 p.m. in Bethlehem, Pa.
