Spiders Comeback Fall Short at JMU, 4-3

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team lost the doubles point and rallied back in singles but fell one point short against James Madison, 4-3, Friday night at East Campus Tennis Courts.
The Spiders started the match by dropping the first two doubles matches. JMU's Paul Mendoza and Holden Koons earned a 6-1 win against 60th ranked doubles pair sophomore Josh Keitelman (Chevy Chase, Md.) and senior Matt Fernandez (Richmond, Va.).
The Dukes clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles as Alvaro Arce and Gonzalo Adis defeated senior George Lovitt (Marvin, N.C.) and sophomore John Walsh (Bryn Mawr, Pa.).
In the final doubles match, senior Klein Evans (Raleigh, N.C.) and sophomore Campbell Erwin (San Antonio, Texas) were trailing 4-5 against William Karpinski and Tate Steinour when the double point was clinch.
In singles, James Madison increased its lead to 2-0 after Arce won in straight sets against Evans, 7-6 (5), 6-4. The Spiders answered as Fernandez won in three sets against Mendoza, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1 singles. Lovitt tied the match at 2-2 after winning in the third set against Stefan Petrovic, 1-6, 7-5, 6-3.
JMU took a 3-2 lead after Damon Roberts won in straight sets against freshman Ricky Bell (Rockville, Md.), 6-2, 6-2, at No. 6 singles.
In the final match, Erwin won a third-set super tiebreaker against Adis, 6-2, 6-7 (4), 10-7 at No. 5 singles. Erwin lost a second set tiebreaker 7-4 but bounced back to win the third set super tiebreaker 10-7.
Richmond will face crosstown rival VCU on Wednesday, Jan. 29, at 3 p.m. inside the VCU bubble.
