Swimming and Diving Takes on Villanova on Senior Day

RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond swimming and diving was back in the Robins Center Natatorium for its annual Senior Day meet Friday evening. The Spiders took on the Villanova Wildcats of the Big East in a dual meet, falling 173-124. Prior to the start of the meet, head coach Matt Barany recognized his 2020 senior class featuring Maddy Chao (Niskayuna, N.Y.), Lexie Gilbert (Annapolis, Md.), Hannah Gouger (Cockeysville, Md.), Eliza Manning (Frederick County, Md.) and Sydney Weiskopf (Clifton Park, N.Y.).
The meet started with the quartet of Gouger, Maggie Purcell (Southampton, N.Y.), Claire O'Shaughnessy (Laurel, Md.) and Manning teamed up for the second-fastest time of the season in the 200-medley relay to begin the race, turning in a time of 1:45.29. The meet ended with a 200-freestyle relay where Jordan Kohut (Raleigh, N.C.), Lauren Medlin (Cary, N.C.), Manning and Gouger added a first-place finish and a season's third-best time at 1:37.57.
The Spiders saw a pair of first-place finishers in the dual meet. Gouger took first in the 100-backstroke with a time of 56.18, and Purcell took first in the 200 breaststroke with her season-best time of 2:17.94. Also in the 200-breaststroke, Gilbert added a third-place finish at 2:26.49.
Richmond saw several second-place finishes in Friday's dual meet. Purcell earned a silver medal in the 200-freestyle with her and the team's season-best time at 1:52.13. Freshman Sara Greene (Tega Cay, S.C.) took second in the 100-breaststroke at 1:06.62.
Medlin added a second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a 24.28 time. She earned another second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle at 51.87.
Purcell and Gouger each added another second-place finish. Gouger finished the 200-backstroke with a time of 2:03.49, and Purcell took silver in the 200-individual medley at 2:05.07.
Richmond tallied three third-place finishes during the meet. O'Shaughnessy earned third in the 200-butterfly with a time of 2:07.66, and a third-place finish in the 500-freestyle at her new season-best time 5:11.74. Rachel Pak (Fairfax, Va.) added a third-place finish in the 100-butterfly with a time of 59.26.
In the diving competition, the seniors were the Spiders top point-getters. Chao took second in the 1-meter event with her season-best score of 255.29. Weiskopf added a third-place finish at 244.72. Weiskopf was the Spiders top performer in the 3-meter event, scoring a 255.45.
The Spiders will return to the pool for the Atlantic 10 Championships in Geneva, Ohio February 19-22 at the SPIRE Institute.
