Women’s Basketball Welcomes Navy For Home Opener On Wednesday

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team will welcome Patriot League member the United States Naval Academy on Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 5 p.m. inside the Robins Center.

ABOUT NAVY
Navy opened their 2020-21 season with a 72-68 road loss at George Mason on Sunday, Nov. 29. Navy was outscored 31-22 in the fourth quarter. Senior Sophie Gatzounas scored a career-high 26 points, including 9-for-9 from the free throw line. Three other Navy players finished in double-figures in Kolbi Green (13 points), Sydne Watts (12 points) and Lindsay Llewellyn (12 points). The Midshipmen scored 44 points in the final two quarters but came up just short despite shooting 85 percent from the free throw line (23-for-27).
ROUSSELL'S NAVY CONNECTIONS
Head coach Aaron Roussell has a strong history with Navy having won 11 of his last 12 games against them at Bucknell before coming to the Spiders. Roussell won his first Patriot League Championship against Navy in 2017. Graduate assistant Kate Walker had 14 points (six points in overtime, including the go-ahead basket), six rebounds and was 2-for-3 from downtown in 34 minutes. Roussell attended the same high school as Navy sophomore point guard Mimi Schrader (Wayzata HS in Plymouth, Minnesota. Her high school coach, Mike Schumacher, was one of Roussell's assistant high school coaches in basketball and football.
HISTORY AGAINST NAVY
This will be the ninth meeting all-time between the two teams with Richmond leading the series 5-3. In the last meeting, Navy earned a 76-56 win on Dec. 6, 2017 at the Robins Center. Sophie Gatzounas had nine points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Alex Parson finished with 10 points and four rebounds. Former Spider Micaela Parson had 19 points. The Spiders last win against Navy was on Jan. 4, 2013 in a memorable 65-59 comeback win. Richmond trailed by 18 points and rallied thanks to Spider Hall-of-Famer Becca Wann's 17 points.
ROBINS CENTER SUCCESS IN ROUSSELL ERA
Head coach Aaron Roussell was able to establish a strong home atmosphere that saw the Spiders go 7-5 at the Robins Center in his first season. Roussell's Robins Center opener in 2019-20 was a 57-55 win against Florida Atlantic after a game-winning basket from Emma Squires. The Spiders also earned four A-10 wins at home, including a perfect 2-0 record in overtime against St. Bonaventure (63-59 OT) and Duquesne (67-64 OT). Roussell helped Richmond snap a three-year losing streak in home openers last season. The Spiders are 6-4 in their last 10 home openers dating back to the 2010-11 season.
KLIMKIEWICZ LEADS THE WAY AGAINST THE HOKIES
Junior Kate Klimkiewicz led the team with 14 points and was 4-for-5 from the free throw line against Virginia Tech. Klimkiewicz tied her career-high with four steals and grabbed four rebounds. Klimkiewicz went 5-for-16 from the field.
SPIDERS GET TO THE FREE THROW LINE
The Spiders finished the game against Virginia Tech going 13-for-17 at the free throw line. Richmond shot 76.5 percent and only missed four free throws against the Hokies. Klimkiewicz was 4-for-5, Budnik was 3-for-3, Grace Townsend was 3-for-4, Holt was 2-for-4, and Chapman was 1-for-1. Most of the damage came in the final two quarters as Richmond was more aggressive getting to the free throw line.
