Richmond Drops A-10 Opener Against VCU
12/20/2020 | Women's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team fell behind early and its comeback fell short in a 73-49 loss against VCU on Sunday, Dec. 20 at the Robins Center. Junior Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) led the Spiders with 19 points.
"Obviously, this was a tough week for us," head coach Aaron Roussell said. "We didn't execute very well and I thought VCU came in with an edge. It was tough recovering after that first quarter. I hope this is something we can learn from and look like a different team on Tuesday."
The Spiders (3-2, 0-1 A-10) just couldn't recover from a 25-4 first quarter deficit and only shot 31.4 percent from the field (16-for-51). Richmond ended the game with 22 turnovers and was out-rebounded by VCU, 48-32. Four players finished in double-figures for the Rams with Taya Robinson leading the way with 15 points.
Klimkiewicz had a solid game with 19 points, five rebounds and was 5-for-6 from the three-point line. Freshman Grace Townsend (Midlothian, Va.) had eight points and three assists off the bench for the Spiders. Sophomore Elaina Chapman (Richmond, Va.) finished with 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
VCU stormed ahead with a 25-4 first quarter lead after shooting 58.8 percent from the field (10-for-17). Richmond had trouble with the ball committing seven turnovers and were 1-for-12 from the floor. VCU's Taya Robinson had 10 points in the first quarter to lead all scorers.
The Spiders got back into the game outscoring VCU, 17-10, in the second quarter to only trail 35-21 at halftime. Chapman led the way with six points and four rebounds in the quarter. Townsend went a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line and added seven points. UR opened the second quarter with a 13-4 run to cut the lead to 29-17 with 6:02 left. The Spiders scored the last four points of the quarter, including a jumper by junior Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.).
VCU put the game out of reach with a 22-point third quarter and increased their lead to 21 points for the game. The Rams opened the third quarter with a 13-2 run to shut the door on any comeback for UR. Richmond finished the quarter outscoring VCU, 7-4.
In the fourth quarter, Klimkiewicz caught fire going 3-for-3 from downtown but VCU had already built too much of a lead. Klimkiewicz's three-pointer with 4:06 remaining got Richmond within 18 points. The Rams would end the game on a 9-3 run to close out the victory.
The Spiders end the semester with a road game at Howard on Tuesday, Dec. 22, at 2 p.m.
