Richmond Heads To Howard For Non-Conference Battle

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team has a quick turnaround to face Howard on the road on Tuesday, Dec. 22, at 2 p.m. inside Burr Gymnasium.
RICHMOND LOOKS TO REBOUND AGAINST HOWARD
The University of Richmond women's basketball team saw its three-game winning streak get snapped in a 73-49 loss against VCU on Sunday, Dec. 20. The Spiders started slow falling behind 25-4 and never recovered dropping their Atlantic 10 opener at the Robins Center.
Richmond (3-2, 0-1 A-10) shot just 31.4 percent from the field (16-for-51) and was outrebounded 48-32 in the loss. UR had a tough shooting game going 5-for-16 from the three-point line. The 49 total points was the lowest output of the season for the Spiders.
Junior Kate Klimkiewicz led all scorers with 19 points, setting a new A-10 career-high and hit a career-best five three-pointers against the Rams. Sophomore Elaina Chapman scored a season-high 11 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Freshman Grace Townsend added eight points off the bench and was 6-for-7 from the free throw line.
ABOUT HOWARD
Howard is off to a solid start at 3-1, including two wins against Atlantic 10 opponents at La Salle (75-72) and vs. George Washington (63-53). The Bison also defeated Mount St. Mary's 87-83. Howard's lone loss was on the road at Longwood, 89-78, on Dec. 19. Jayla Thornton leads the team in scoring at 14.3 points per game and Kaiya Creek is tied for the team lead at 14.3 points per game off the bench. Anzhane Hutton is third at 12.8 points per game. Hutton leads the team in rebounding at 9.3 boards per game. Howard has 32 blocks in four games and has dished out 50 assists.
HISTORY AGAINST HOWARD
This will be sixth meeting all-time between the two teams with Richmond holding a perfect 5-0 record. The first meeting was on Dec. 8, 1992 in a 87-56 win for UR. The previous meeting was a 67-60 win on Dec. 8, 2018. Four Spiders finished in double-figures with Kailyn Fee leading the way with 16 points off 4-for-9 shooting from the three-point line. Alex Parson added 15 points and Madelyn Neff had 10 points off the bench. Richmond is 2-0 on the road against the Bison and this is the first time playing in Washington since Dec. 21, 2005.
KLIMKIEWICZ SETS NEW A-10 HIGH & CAREER MARK FROM 3
Junior guard Kate Klimkiewicz led all scorers with 19 points off 6-for-11 shooting against VCU. Klimkiewicz set a new A-10 career-high in points and was 5-for-6 from the three-point line, a new career-high. Klimkiewicz also pulled down five rebounds in the loss. Klimkiewicz leads the team in scoring at 15.8 points per game and has hit a team-best 10 three-pointers through five games.
BUDNIK SITS 8TH IN THE NATION IN BLOCKS PER GAME
Freshman Addie Budnik finished with a career-high five blocks against Gardner-Webb and is 8th in the nation in blocks per game (3.00) with 15 through five games. Budnik's 15 blocks is tied for the most out of all the freshmen in the NCAA with South Carolina State's Trinity Klock. Budnik had three blocks against William & Mary and added a block against VCU.
