Men’s Lacrosse Moves Into National Ranking At No. 19

RICHMOND, Va. – For the seventh time in program history, the University of Richmond men's lacrosse team is nationally ranked moving into 19th place overall in the USILA Coaches Poll and the Maverik Inside Lacrosse Polls Monday. The Spiders continue their three-game home stretch to start the season Friday evening hosting the defending MAAC champion Marist Red Foxes at 6 p.m. at Robins Stadium.
This marks the second-straight season that the Spiders have been nationally ranked. Last season, Richmond made its first appearance in the rankings in week three after defeating No. 6 Notre Dame and finished the year ranked No. 18 in the country.
Richmond moved into the national rankings this week despite suffering a double overtime loss to No. 4 Maryland Saturday in the season opener. The Spiders, who were receiving votes in the preseason polls, led the Terrapins 12-7 in the third quarter but suffered the heartbreaking loss in just the fourth contest in program history to reach a second overtime and the first since 2016 (3OT vs. Furman).
Junior midfielder Mitch Savoca (Newtown, Conn.) and freshman attack Richie Connell (Evergreen, Colo.) led the way with three goals apiece against Maryland. Connell became the second Spider freshmen all-time to notch a hat trick in a collegiate debut, joining the likes of Spider great Mitch Goldberg who accomplished the feat in 2014 in the first game in program history.
