Spiders Finish Tied For 11th In Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. – Richmond's men's golf team finished tied for 11th in the 14-team field at the Mobile Sports Authority Collegiate Tuesday at the Magnolia Grove Golf Club, the Spiders first event of the spring season.
Richmond carded a team score of 287 (-1) in Tuesday's final round, its best of the three-round event, as a pair of freshmen shot in red figures. Ben Cooper shot a two-under 70 and Lou Baker shot a one-under 71 on Tuesday as both finished the event with a 54-hole score of 214 (-2), tied for 27th in the 80-man field. As a team, the Spiders finished at 867, three strokes over par.
"It was great to have our two freshmen play well," said coach Adam Decker. "Overall, we're obviously not satisfied with our finish but it was good to get a look at where we are now and identify the things we need to focus on in practice."
In addition to the two freshmen, the Spiders lineup featured a pair of sophomores and a junior. Sophomore Michael Childress birdied four of his first six holes en route to shooting an even-par 72 on Tuesday to finished the event tied for 47th at 218 (+2). Junior Michael Baker was three strokes back at 221 (+5), tied for 55th. Sophomore Carter Cook placed 76th at 231 (+15).
The Spiders next event is more than a month away, as Richmond won't return to competition until the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular in Howley-in-the-Hills, Florida on March 14th and 15th.
