Swim and Dive Moves into Fifth Place After Day Two of the Atlantic 10 Championships

GENEVA, Ohio – Richmond swimming and diving was back in the pool Thursday morning and evening at the SPIRE Institute on day two of the Atlantic 10 Championships. The Spiders competed in the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley and the 50 freestyle during the preliminary round during the morning and had seven swimmers move on to the finals round Thursday night. Richmond has accrued 156 points, trailing first-place George Washington's total of 251.
In the preliminary round, the Spiders had two swimmers compete in the 500 freestyle. Freshman Claire O'Shaughnessy (Laurel, Md.) turned in her best time of the season, finishing 18th at 4:59.22, improving her season's best time by nearly 12 seconds. Grace Palfreyman (Bridgewater, N.J.) added a 21st place finish with a time of 5:01.55, also her season's best time.
Maggie Purcell (Southampton, N.Y.), Eliza Manning (Frederick County, Md.), Ellie Ronan (Marblehead, Mass.) and Lexie Gilbert (Annapolis, Md.) earned spots in the finals in the 200-individual medley. Ronan and Gilbert competed in the consolation final. Gilbert finished 16th at 2:04.61, and Ronan was 13th at 2:03.49, both being their top times of the season. Purcell and Manning competed in the championship final. Purcell earned a fifth-place finish and Manning seventh with season-best times of 2:00.92 and 2:01.73, respectively.
The 50 freestyle saw swimmers compete in the preliminary round, with three advancing to the finals. Jordan Kohut (Raleigh, N.C.) didn't qualify for the race at night, but finished with a personal-best time of 23.84. Hannah Gouger (Cockeysville, Md.) and Kristine Mihm (Wexford, Pa.) competed in the consolation final. Gouger took 12th and Mihm 13th as each tuned in top times this season at 23.61 and 23.64, respectively. Lauren Medlin (Cary, N.C.) qualified for the championship final and turned in a 23.52 time, good for eighth and was nearly a half second faster than her previous best.
The 200-freestyle relay team of Manning, Gouger, Mihm and Medlin finished third, improving on the team's season-best time by two seconds at 1:33.03.
The Spiders are back in action tomorrow on the third day of the Atlantic 10 Championships. Tomorrow's preliminary round will feature the 400 IM, the 100 butterfly, the 200 freestyle, the 100 breaststroke. the 100 backstroke and the 3-meter diving event. Finals for qualified swimmers and divers of those events will begin at 6:30 tomorrow night.
