GENEVA, Ohio – Richmond swimming and diving closed the 2020 Atlantic 10 Championships meet Saturday night at the SPIRE Institute. The Spiders took fourth with 453.5 points throughout the meet as George Washington won the 2020 Atlantic 10 Championship with a total of 608 points. Fordham was second with 534, and two-time defending champion Duquesne was third with 525.
Hannah Gouger again made history, becoming just the sixth person to win the same event for four-straight seasons after taking the 200 backstroke at 1:55.84. After winning the 100-backstroke last night, she is just the third person in Atlantic 10 history to win two events in all four years of their eligibility. She joins fellow Spiders Lauren Beaudreau (200 Breaststroke, 200 Individual Medley), and Mary Adams (200 IM, 400 IM) as the only competitors to accomplish that feat.
Also earning points in the 200 backstroke was junior Ellie Ronan (Marblehead, Mass.). Ronan finished sixth with a time of 1:59.19, her best time of the season.
The 100-yard freestyle saw freshman Lauren Medlin (Cary, N.C.) take home a silver medal, finishing in 50.43, a half second faster than her previous best. Eliza Manning (Frederick County, Md.) added a fifth-place finish in the 100 free, finishing in 50.99, also a season-best. Kristine Mihm (Wexford, Pa.) added a 14th place finish in the consolation final with a time of 51.35.
Maggie Purcell (Southampton, N.Y.) Earned an NCAA 'B' cut time in the 200-yard breaststroke. The sophomore took first with a 2:12.84 time. 0.01 seconds separated Purcell and the silver medalist from St. Bonaventure. Lexie Gilbert (Annapolis, Md.) and Jenna Miller (Annapolis, Md.) took 11th and 15th, respectively as each finished with a season-best time. Gilbert finished in 2:18.49, and Miller was at 2:21.95.
Freshman Claire O'Shaughnessy (Laurel, Md.) tallied a pair of points in the 200-yard butterfly. O'Shaughnessy finished in 2:05.56 to earn the points.
The 400 freestyle relay event anchored the evening. The quartet of Manning, Purcell, Mihm and Medlin earned a silver medal in 3:22.55.
Some of the Spiders will be back in action next week in a last chance meet in Annapolis, Md. Spiders will compete for one more chance to earn a qualifying time for the NCAA Meet in Athens, Ga., hosted by the University of Georgia March 18th-21st.
