Richmond Comeback Falls Short At Dayton In A-10 Championship Quarterfinal

DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Richmond women's basketball team held Dayton to five points in the fourth quarter but its late comeback fell short 79-68 in the Atlantic 10 Championship quarterfinals Friday afternoon at UD arena.
Richmond finishes the 2019-20 season with a 15-17 overall record and had a six-win improvement from a season ago. Senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) was solid with 20 points in her final game as a Spider off 8-for-15 from the field. Hinds-Clarke finished her career with 1,130 career points, which is 17th all-time in school history.
Sophomore Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) scored 13 points off 4-for-9 shooting and freshman Angel Burgos (Richmond, Va.) was a spark off the bench with a career-high 13 points off 5-for-7 from the field. Sophomore Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.) added eight points and sophomore Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.) finished with seven points.
The Spiders shot 41.7 percent from the field (25-for-60) and hit 7-for-25 from the three-point line. Dayton shot 39.7 percent (25-for-63) after a blistering 61.9 percent in the first quarter. The Flyers outrebounded Richmond 46-32, including 20 offensive rebounds. Dayton also had 18 second chance points and hit 13 three-pointers but only two in the final two quarters. Erin Whalen led the team with 21 points and was 6-for-7 from downtown.
In an offensive first half, Dayton shot 65 percent from the field and led Richmond 57-39 at halftime. Hinds-Clarke and Klimkiewicz each scored 11 points. Hinds-Clarke scored all 11 points in the second quarter. The Flyers hit 11 three-pointers in two quarters, led by Whalen's 21 points and was 6-for-6 from downtown.
Richmond started the game with a Klimkiewicz three-pointer but Dayton answered with a 16-3 run to pull ahead 16-6. The Spiders finished with 17 points in the first quarter and was 7-for-14 from the field. The Flyers couldn't miss with 33 points and 7-for-9 from the three-point line.
The Spiders opened the second quarter scoring the first five points. Carpenter hit a three-pointer to get Richmond within 11 points at 36-25. The Flyers would build their lead back up to double digits and outscore Richmond 24-22 in the quarter.
Richmond kept battling in the third quarter outscoring Dayton 20-17. Hinds-Clarke kept the Spiders in the game with seven points in the quarter. Burgos hit all three of her shots in the third quarter and finished with seven points. The Spiders only committed four turnovers in the third quarter to get within 74-59.
In the final quarter, the Spiders scored the first four points to cut the lead to 74-63 with 6:57 remaining. Four minutes went by without any scoring from either team. Holt broke the scoreless streak with a three-pointer to make it 74-66. Dayton scored off an offensive rebound by Julia Chandler to go back up 10 to seal the win. The Flyers hit free throws late to push the final score to 79-68. Richmond held Dayton to just 22 points in the final two quarters.
