#20 Men’s Lacrosse Opens SoCon Play In Dominant Fashion At VMI

LEXINGTON, Va. – Twelve different Spiders scored Saturday afternoon as the 20th-ranked University of Richmond men's lacrosse team opened Southern Conference play with a dominant 17-4 victory at VMI. The victory improves the Spiders to 30-5 all-time in the SoCon's six-year history, the most wins by any program in league history. Richmond has seven more wins than any other program during that span.
Richmond (4-3, 1-0 SoCon) won its sixth-straight over the Keydets, out-scoring VMI by a 96-35 during those six wins including back-to-back years with the identical 17-4 score. The Spiders' 17 goals are the most in a game this season while the four goals against are the fewest allowed this year.
A season-high 12 different Spiders scored in the victory with junior midfielder Mitch Savoca (Newtown, Conn.) leading the way with his third hat trick of the season. Savoca has scored in six of seven games this year and has tallied 13 goals on the season.
Junior attack Ryan Lanchbury (Oakville, Ontario) recorded a team-high five points in the win, scoring two goals and adding three assists. Lanchbury has now tallied a point in 30-straight games, scoring 125 points during that stretch. Junior attack Austin Reid (Clinton, Conn.) scored his first two goals of the year while freshman Dalton Young (Chantilly, Va.) recorded his second-straight multi-goal game.
Richmond out-shot VMI 53-25 in the victory. The 53 shots are a program-record for the Spiders, surpassing the previous mark of 52 shots also set against VMI in the 2015 season. Nineteen different Spiders recorded shots in the win with Lanchbury leading with eight shots on the day.
Savoca opened the scoring just two minutes into before VMI (0-4, 0-1 SoCon) answered back at the 10:42 mark. The Spiders would answer back, scoring the next 12 goals taking a 13-1 lead in the third quarter. Reid and Young scored their two goals in the run while Savoca added two more for his hat trick.
Seniors Tate Gallagher (Ardmore, Pa.), Adrian Nash (Tully, N.Y.) and Tyler Shoults (Warners, N.Y.) each scored in the run while Ryan Dunn (Towson, Md.) and Brett Reid (Clinton, Conn.) found the back of the net, running the lead to 12 goals.
In the fourth quarter, senior Kevin Todd (Collegeville, Pa.) scored his third of the year while seniors Michael Reale (Westport, Conn.) and Matt Davies (Dover, Mass.) each scored their first of the year to round out the scoring.
Richmond used three goalies in the win with redshirt junior Jack Rusbuldt (Richmond, Va.) playing the first three quarters, making nine saves and allowing two goals. Senior Blake Goodman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) junior George Uppgren (Stillwater, Minn.) each played in the fourth quarter of the game.
