Richie Connell and Jake Kapp Named Freshman All-America
04/07/2020 | Men's Lacrosse
RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond freshman attack Richie Connell (Evergreen, Colo.) and long-stick midfielder Jake Kapp (Pepper Pike, Ohio) were named Freshman All-America by College Crosse Tuesday. Connell earned First Team Freshman All-America honors while Kapp was named Honorable Mention Freshman All-America.
Richmond is the only team from the Southern Conference with a First Team member and one of two teams in the league with two student-athletes honored among the top freshmen in the country.
Connell was named one of the three First Team Freshman All-Americans on attack, joining Dyson Williams of Duke and Josh Zawada of Michigan. He finished second in the country among all freshmen in NCAA Division I men's lacrosse this season in scoring with 19 goals in just seven games. Connell scored multiple goals in five games this season, including four games with three or more goals. He led the country with seven man-up goals in seven games, that mark ranks second all-time in single season history for a Spider, despite only playing seven games.
Kapp was named Honorable Mention Freshman All-America for his work as a long-stick midfielder – one of just 11 at the position honored nationally. He played in all seven games for the Spiders, seeing his playing time increase with every game. He finished the year with eight ground balls and six caused turnovers on the season. He played an imperative role in the Spiders being ranked No. 20 in the nation at the end of the year with one of the top defensive units in the SoCon.
