Record-Setting #URHere Giving Day Is A Resounding Success

RICHMOND, Va. – One year ago, the inaugural #URHere Giving Day was deemed a smashing success for the University of Richmond and Spider Athletics, but the second-annual version has surpassed it in almost every way imaginable. The 2020 #URHere Giving Day held at the end of May over a 36-hour period was an unapparelled event for Spider Athletics as the Athletics Department accounted for nearly a third of all donations to the University of Richmond.
The Spider Club Office, which is responsible for providing critical philanthropic support for Spider Athletics, coordinated the 36-hour event, raising $512,678, tallying nearly five times as much as last season's total ($104,649). The Athletics Department total helped the University of Richmond as a whole raise $1.55 million dollars in the #URHere Giving Day event.
"When challenges arise, the Spider community rises to meet them," Vice President and Director of Athletics John Hardt said. "Never has that been more evident than during this year's UR Here Giving Day. In this time of national and global crisis, the generosity of our Richmond alumni, parents, friends, and fans has been truly inspiring. I am humbled by their commitment and generous support of the work we do providing our Spider student-athletes with opportunities and support to achieve, serve and lead at the highest levels! On behalf of Spider athletics, I thank you!"
Maybe even more impressive than the monetary total was the Spider Club's ability to attract donors from all over the globe, bringing in a staggering 2,569 donors this year. The Spiders accounted for over 60 percent of the University's donor total of 4,212. This year's total also obliterated last year's mark of 805 donors total. In fact, the Spiders almost had two programs individually meet the total mark from last year alone, with women's lacrosse (721) and swimming & diving (703).
This marked the second-straight season that the women's lacrosse program won the competition for most donors and in turn secured an extra $5,000 for their program in the competition. Last season, women's lacrosse led with 144 total donors and this year led with 721. In fact, five different programs this year eclipsed the leading mark from last year as swimming & diving (703), football (280), soccer (217) and baseball (161) joined women's lacrosse.
"We are very thankful for everyone who supported our program and student-athletes on giving day," women's lacrosse head coach Allison Kwolek said. "To have so many families, alums, friends and fans all come together over 36 hours for the event was especially meaningful. We can't thank everyone enough for their generosity and wonderful support."
The women's lacrosse program also took home the top spot and a second $5,000 incentive to its program with the most dollars raised by a program. The program brought in $42,767 on its own while men's basketball was second with $35,115 and swimming and diving was third with $33,874. Last year, men's basketball raised the most at $18,785 and this season seven program eclipsed the mark with football, men's lacrosse, field hockey and soccer joining the top three programs.
