RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Athletic Department announced that football, men's basketball and women's basketball student-athletes will be welcomed back to campus starting July 15th.
Student-athletes will return to campus progressing through a detailed process to ensure the health, safety and ongoing well-being of student-athletes and staff. The protocols established for returning student athletes conform with the Governor's Forward Virginia Plan and are aligned with the University's Physical Distancing Framework.
"We are pleased to start the much-anticipated process of safely welcoming our Spider student-athletes back to campus through a medical and public health-informed protocol and plan," Vice President and Director of Athletics John P. Hardt said. "We are taking the utmost care to ensure that all student-athletes and staff return to a safe and healthy environment. Our protocols and plans have been developed in accordance with NCAA guidelines and with University officials and medical professionals who have collaborated with officials at the local, state and national levels as we plan for the return of all our students."
The detailed process for reopening the athletic campus for student-athletes includes a 14-day pre-report risk assessment, a self-quarantine period, a COVID-19 PCR testing upon arrival to campus, resocialization progression to campus, daily risk assessments including on-going health monitoring with regular temperature checks, as well as pre-participatory medical exams. Also, the student-athletes' training will be limited to participating in small groups for physical conditioning during the first two weeks of being back on campus.
Student-athletes and staff will have daily screenings and they will be provided items and guidelines necessary to participate in team functions (e.g., physical distancing, wearing face coverings, personal hygiene, etc.). All athletics facilities will be subjected to rigorous cleaning and sanitization, with high-risk areas, including locker rooms, strength and conditioning spaces and athletic training rooms, cleaned daily. Any individual who tests positive for COVID-19 will be placed in isolation, per Virginia Department of Health guidelines and contact tracing will be conducted to identify any close contacts.
The second phase of returning student-athletes to Richmond's campus is being planned for a later date in August. This group of sports will include field hockey, women's soccer, and men's and women's cross country.
