Turnover Bug Bites Spiders at Elon
12/17/2025 | Men's Basketball
ELON, N.C. — Elon was able to turn 20 Richmond turnovers into 29 points in a 73-70 win over the Spiders Wednesday, handing UR its first loss in its last five games. The defeat dropped Richmond to 9-2 on the season.
I can't ever remember having a number that high, said Mooney of Richmond's turnover total. So many of them were live ball turnovers. So many of them felt not super forced. I can't remember any of them coming in a trap or a double team or anything like that. I don't know what to make of it. It's obviously something we haven't had to really concentrate on here very often, but we'll have to really concentrate on that to make sure that can't happen. That's just far too many.
Richmond's 20 turnovers were its most since committing 20 vs La Salle on Jan. 22, 2020 and nine more than its average over the first 10 games of the season (11.1). Even with its turnover issues, Richmond led in the game's final minutes, as a pair of free throws by AJ Lopez gave the Spiders a 68-65 lead with 3:42 remaining.
I thought when they were running half-court offense, I thought we were great, said Mooney. I thought we battled. I thought we were active, we were physical.
Elon answered with a three-pointer by Randall Pettus to tie the score at 68. After a follow-up dunk by UR's Mike Walz tied the game at 70 with 1:19 remaining, a three-point play by Elon's Chandler Cuthrell, who entered the game as one of the nation's leading scorers at 22.7 points per game but was limited to nine points Wednesday, put Elon ahead for good.
The Spiders missed a pair of potential game-tying three-pointers in the final 30 seconds as they made just one of their final seven shots from the field. Elon made its last six field goal attempts to earn its first win vs UR in three all-time meetings vs the Spiders.
AJ Lopez led Richmond with 15 points and recorded Richmond's only two blocks. Apostolos Roumoglou added 12 points, his first double-digit scoring game since Jan. 8 of last season, while leading UR with four assists and three steals. Jaden Daughtry was the final Spider in double figures, with 10 points.
I thought AP was really, really good, said Mooney of Roumoglou. He shot the ball well. He rebounded. He's really an asset to us defensively. We switch a good amount and when he's in there you feel more comfortable switching because he can defend guards. He can defend on the perimeter.
Richmond has two games remaining on its non-conference schedule. The Spiders will host The Citadel on December 20 at 6 PM and Charleston Southern on December 28 at 4 PM. Both games will air on ESPN Plus.
We're going to really work hard tomorrow, said Mooney. Our guys are finished with finals, and we'll make sure that we're together a good part of the day so we can really work on some of the things that need to be addressed.
