01/13/2021 | Women's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team remained undefeated in the new year with a 47-42 win against George Washington Friday at the Robins Center. Junior Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) recorded her first career double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
"That was a big win for this team and our program," Head coach Aaron Roussell said. "Today we won a game in the forties, I don't think anyone in that locker room understands what that means for this program. I thought we defended very well. Rebounding was a huge difference today and being able to extend those possessions in the fourth quarter was big."
The Spiders (6-3, 3-1 A-10) continue their hot start to the new year with three-straight wins in 2021. Richmond did a great job on the glass outrebounding George Washington, 51-32, including 18 offensive rebounds. Klimkiewicz pulled down a career-high 14, sophomore Elaina Chapman (Richmond, Va.) grabbed 10 and freshman Grace Townsend (Midlothian, Va.) finished with eight rebounds. Freshman Addie Budnik (Highland Park, Ill.) added 12 points, four rebounds and one block, extending her streak of a block in every game.
The Spiders held George Washington to just 30.0 percent from the field (18-for-60) and 13.3 percent from the three-point line (2-for-15). Richmond hit a couple of free throws late to close the game out.
In the fourth quarter, George Washington mounted a comeback cutting the lead to 45-42 with under a minute remaining. Senior Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) drew a huge charge with 25 seconds left to give the ball back to the Spiders. Townsend and freshman Siobhan Ryan (Buffalo, N.Y.) each hit a free throw to make the final score 47-42. GW outscored UR, 13-6, in the final quarter but key defensive stops proved to be the difference.
Richmond took a 25-21 halftime lead against George Washington thanks to 10 points from Klimkiewicz. Both teams were cold from the field as the Spiders shot just 37.5 percent (9-for-24) and 3-of-14 from the three-point line. Richmond held GW to just 25.8 percent from the field (8-for-31) and 2-of-10 from downtown. Budnik added six points and Chapman scored four.
In the first quarter, Richmond outscored GW, 11-6, ending the quarter on a 7-2 run. Budnik made a layup to tie the game at 4-4 and Klimkiewicz followed with a three-pointer to push the lead to 7-4. Townsend hit two free throws to give the Spiders an 11-6 lead after holding the Colonials scoreless for the final three minutes of the first quarter.
GW responded in the second quarter scoring the first seven points to tie the game at 11-11. Junior Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.) hit a three-pointer to give Richmond the lead back at 15-13 and Klimkiewicz nailed a three-pointer on the next possession to increase the lead to 18-13. The Colonials outscored UR, 15-14, in the second quarter, including a three-pointer to beat the buzzer from GW's Caranda Perea.
The Spiders opened the third quarter with a 12-2 run to push their lead to 37-23 after a driving layup from Carpenter. The Colonials tried to keep the game close ending the quarter by outscoring Richmond, 6-4, in the last three minutes. Chapman, Budnik and Klimkiewicz combined to score 12 of the 16 third quarter points to help UR lead 41-29.
"We know there is a tough stretch coming up," Roussell added. "We still have some things to work on and hopefully we come out and have a great performance on Friday.
The Spiders continue their home stand with a game against Rhode Island on Friday, Jan. 15 at 5 p.m. inside the Robins Center.
