High Scoring Spiders Dominate George Mason, 86-48

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team scored a season-high 86 points, most points scored at the Robins Center since 2017, in a dominate wire-to-wire victory against George Mason, 86-48, Tuesday night.
Sophomore Elaina Chapman (Richmond, Va.) scored a career-high 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds in 22 minutes of action. Junior Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.) added 12 points and freshman Maya Ettle (Bethlehem, Pa.) finished with a career-high 11 points, including 3-for-3 from downtown. Junior Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) had eight points, three steals and two three-pointers in 17 minutes.
"Obviously, you have to be happy as a head coach coming into a game like this," head coach Aaron Roussell said. "Elaina set the tone early and she has been finishing really well at the basket. I think you can see the excitement from her teammates when she has games like this."
UR improves to 8-4 overall and 5-2 in the Atlantic 10 with a wire-to-wire win against the Patriots. Richmond shot 47.9 percent from the field (34-for-71) and hit 10 three-pointers, including one from six different players. The Spiders held Mason to just 48 points, 26 turnovers and came away with a season-high 14 steals. 13 different players scored a basket for Richmond in a balanced effort.
Richmond stormed out of the gates with a 21-8 first-quarter lead, including a 15-2 run to finish. The game was tied at 6-6 with 6:50 remaining before the Spiders closed the quarter on a 15-2 run. Chapman was a force inside scoring 10 points in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Richmond had another 8-0 run to push their lead to 34-13 off a three-pointer from Klimkiewicz. UR outscored George Mason, 22-14 in the second quarter and held a 43-22 halftime lead. The Spiders shot 50 percent from the field (17-for-34) and hit four three-pointers. The defense forced 16 turnovers from George Mason and came away with 11 steals.
The Spiders continued to push the lead in the third quarter outscoring George Mason, 25-15. Ettle had six points in the third off two three-pointers, including one to beat the buzzer to end the quarter. Holt scored seven of her 12 points in the third off 3-for-4 shooting.
In the final quarter, Richmond was able to bring some fresh legs into the game and still finished with 18 points off 7-for-16 shooting. Sophomore Celia Satter (Glencoe, Ill.), playing her first collegiate game, buried a three-pointer and made a fast break layup in the fourth quarter. The Spiders finished with a 38-point margin of victory, their largest win since a 100-63 win on Nov. 22, 2017.
UR finished with 18 assists, including four from freshman Grace Townsend (Midlothian, Va.), who didn't commit a turnover in 16 minutes of action.
Richmond will head to George Washington for an A-10 rematch on Friday, Jan. 29, at 5 p.m.
