10/01/2021 | Field Hockey
DAVDISON, N.C. – University of Richmond sophomore Madi Hyatt (Fredericksburg, Va.) scored twice to lead the field hockey team to a 4-0 victory over Davidson in Atlantic 10 Conference action Friday night at Belk Turf Field.
The Spiders move to 3-7 on the season and 3-1 in conference play, while the Wildcats fall to 2-7 on the year and 0-2 in league action.
Senior Addie Nash (Midlothian, Va.) got the Spiders on the board with her first goal of the season in the ninth minute when she tipped in the deflection off of junior Lindsey Frank (Sarasota Springs, N.Y.) shot on a broken corner play. Frank tallied her second assist of the season on the play.
Just 27 seconds after Nash's goal, Hyatt tallied the second Spider goal of the game and her first of the season. Hyatt intercepted a pass, dribbled to the right corner and fired a shot past the Davidson goalie in the 10th minute of the first quarter.
Richmond controlled possession most of the second and third quarters, taking nine shots and collecting four penalty corners in those two periods, but was unable to score.
Hyatt scored her second goal of the game late in the 47th minute. She scored off a pass from Nash, who was allowed to drive the baseline towards the cage and set up Hyatt for the score.
In the 48th minute, senior Steffie Bongers (Weert, The Netherlands) converted the penalty stroke for the Spiders fourth goal of the game. Bongers moves to 2-for-2 on penalty strokes this season and tallies her fourth goal of the season.
Junior Erika Latta (Midlothian, Va.) and the Spider defense collected their second shutout of the season and in A-10 play, as they held Davidson to just three shots on goal and one penalty corner. The Spiders matched their season-high 10 penalty corners, first tallied at Saint Louis (Sept. 17).
Richmond next heads to Norfolk, Va., to take on No. 19 Old Dominion Sunday, October 3. The contest is set to start at 12 p.m., streaming on Monarch Media (subscription needed).
