REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. -- A balanced effort led Richmond women's golf team to a third-place finish at the Lady Blue Hen Invitational at the Rehoboth Beach Country Club on Sunday as the Spiders concluded their fall season. Four Spiders finished in the top 20 on the individual leaderboard as Richmond combined for a 54-hole team score of 904 (+40) to finish third in the 12-team event.Â
Freshman Lauren Jones was UR's top finisher at 225 (+9), tied for 10th among 72 individual competitors. Jones carded a 77 (+5) in the final round Sunday, registering three birdies and eight bogeys along with seven pars. It was her second straight top-10 finish after finishing runner-up at the Navy Fall Invitational earlier this month. Jones is the first Spider to record a pair of top-10 finishes in the fall of her freshman year since Lizzie Reedy in 2017.Â
Senior Emily Ward was one shot behind Jones at 226 (+10). Ward shot 78 (+6) Sunday, going out in a 6-over 42 before steadying herself and shooting 36 on the back 9. She finished tied for 12th, her first top-20 result of the season.Â
Senior Naomi Mitchell also shot 78 (+6) Sunday and finished in a tie for 16th place at 227 (+11), her best finish of the season. Freshman Rory Weinfurther rounded out the four Spiders in the top 20, finishing in a tie for 19th at 229 (+13). It was Weinfurther's third top-20 finish in four events this season, joining her tie for 17th at the Kingsmill Intercollegiate and her tie for fifth at the Navy Fall Invitational.Â
Junior Vicky Zhu shot 77 (+5) Sunday, matching the lowest round for any Spider. She finished the event tied for 32nd at 235 (+19).
Richmond's team score of 904 (+40 was two shots behind runner-up Harvard and 13 strokes behind champion Princeton.
Making her season debut and playing as an individual, Claire Yioulos tied for 49th at 239 (+23). Yioulos improved her score each round at Rehoboth Beach Country Club, shooting a 77 (+5) Sunday after carding a 79 (+7) in Round 2 and an 83 (+11) in Round 1.
"It was a very balanced effort today, which we needed because the conditions were so tough," said coach Calle Barlow of Round 3, which was played in gusty winds of 20 mph or more.Â
"We had a solid fall season and I'm really looking forward to the spring with this team," said Barlow.Â
Richmond will return to competition on March 7-8, 2022 at the River Landing Classic in Wallace, N.C.
