MIDLOTHIAN, Va. -- Senior Naomi Mitchell earned medalist honors for the second time in her career, shooting even par over 36 holes to finish first in the field of 22 at the Independence Classic at Independence Golf Club. After opening with a 1-under 71 Sunday, Mitchell carded a 1-over 73 Monday to finish one shot ahead of Seton Hall's Sarah Fouratt (145, +1). The win was the second of Mitchell's career and first since finishing first in the field of 15 in Richmond's match at William & Mary last season.Â
Mitchell outpaced the competition on par 4s, playing them in a combined 1-under par, three strokes better than any other golfer. Her six birdies were tied with Fouratt for most in the field.Â
As a team, the Spiders finished at 600 (+24), three strokes clear of Seton Hall and nine ahead of St. John's in the three-team field. Emily Ward, the other member of Richmond's senior class, finished tied for fourth at 149 (+5) after shooting 76 (+4) Tuesday. Sophomore Rory Weinfurther also recorded a top-five finish, shooting 73 (+1) Tuesday to climb from ninth to fourth on the individual leaderboard.Â
Junior Muskan Uppal shot 76 (+4) Tuesday to finish tied for 15th at 158 (+14) and provide Richmond with its fourth and final team score in Round 2.Â
