GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Richmond Spiders men's golf team inched up the leaderboard into 12th place Saturday at the Grandover Collegiate before play was suspended due to darkness late in Round 2. With three golfers still to finish their second round, the Spiders are at even par in Round 2, a marked improvement from the 17-over par 305 the team combined to shoot in Round 1.Â
"We struggled early and dug a big hole," said coach Adam Decker.  "There seemed to be fewer big numbers and guys settled down a bit this afternoon."
Freshman Cole Ekert is the top Spider on the leaderboard at even par after shooting rounds of 73 (+1) and 71 (-1). Ekert is tied for 16th in the field of 101 individuals.
Junior Ben Cooper is tied for 55th at 6-over par with two holes remaining in his second round. Cooper was 7 strokes over par over his first six holes Saturday before rebounding to play his final 28 holes in 1-under par.Â
Cooper is two shots in front of junior Lou Baker, who is tied for 63rd at 8-over par after shooting 78 (+6) and 74 (+2) Saturday. Baker was two strokes under par with four holes to play in Round 2 before playing his final four holes in 4-over par.Â
Sophomore Garrett Clark opened with an 81 (+9) in Round 1 but is 1-under par in Round 2, which he will finish on the par-5 18th hole Sunday morning. Clark is tied for 63rd at 8-over par.Â
Freshman Patrick Isztwan is 11 strokes over par with one hole remaining in his second round. He is tied for 76th in the field.Â
At 17-over par, Richmond is in 12th place in the 15-team field, a one-spot improvement from its position entering Round 2.Â
A pair of Spiders are competing as individuals in Greensboro. Senior Michael Childress is tied for 41st at 4-over par and senior Carter Cook is tied for 55th at 6-over par.Â
Round 2 will resume at 8:30 AM Sunday morning and will be followed by the third and final round.Â

"There are demanding tee shots out here and we need to be able to have balls in a position to approach the undulating putting surfaces," said Decker. "We are not where we want to be and want to finish the fall season competitively."
