Spider Field Hockey Outlasts William & Mary, 4-3

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond field hockey team picked up a non-conference victory over in-state rival William & Mary, 4-3, Friday night at Crenshaw Field.
The Spiders move to 4-8 on the year while the Tribe fall to 3-8 on the season.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Tribe scored first in the second quarter but the Spiders answered 50 seconds later when senior Steffie Bongers (Weert, The Netherlands) scored off a corner play. Junior Tess Keppel (Baltimore, Md.) and senior Olivia Frazier (Cary, N.C.) both tallied assists as the stick-stopper and inserter, respectively.
Junior Lindsey Frank (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) took the lead for the Spiders in the third quarter. Frank intercepted a W&M pass just shy of midfield and took it all the way to the circle, blasting a shot from the right of the cage past the W&M keeper into the lower left corner.
The Tribe tied it 44 seconds later to take a 2-2 score into the fourth quarter.
Sophomore Madi Hyatt (Fredericksburg, Va.) scored the Spiders third goal, putting in the goal from right in front of the cage.
Frazier tallied Richmond's fourth goal, tipping in a shot from Bongers off a pass from Frank in the 54th minute.
William & Mary added a late goal in the 57th minute, but the Spiders defense was able to keep the Tribe offensive pressure at bay.
Spider goalkeeper Erika Latta (Midlothian, Va.) tallied two saves in the game.
Richmond tallied 12 shots with eight on goal while holding William & Mary had 10 shots with five on goal. The Tribe held the advantage in penalty corners, 5-3.
Richmond is back in action Sunday at Crenshaw Field, hosting No. 14 Boston College for a 2 p.m. contest on ESPN+.
