Richmond’s Offense Explodes for 96-47 Win at Hampton
11/13/2021 | Women's Basketball
HAMPTON, Va. – Every single Spider who saw the court Saturday evening made it on the scoresheet as the University of Richmond women's basketball team dominated Hampton University on the road, 96-47. Four of those Spiders scored in double-figures to help Richmond improve to 1-1 on the year while Hampton falls to 1-2.
Saturday also saw the most points Richmond has scored in a single game since Nov. 22, 2017 when the Spiders beat Savannah State 100-63, and it was the first time the Spiders won by a margin of 40 points or more since Dec. 15, 2004 against Howard.
"The team bounced back in a big way today. It hasn't been a fun few days following what we felt was a disappointing opening game, but their response shows a lot about our team," said head coach Aaron Roussell. "We moved the ball very well which led to a lot of easy baskets on the offensive end. On the other side I thought we rebounded the ball incredibly well which resulted in a lot of transition opportunities that we capitalized on."
How It Happened
Hampton won the tip and got a quick basket, but Kate Klimkiewicz got things going early for the Spiders with a block and layup. After trailing 8-6 at 5:36 in the first quarter, freshman Cayla Williams sparked a 13-0 run with for Richmond that was capped by another Klimkiewicz layup to give the Spiders the 19-8 lead. Klimkiewicz added her second triple of the day at the buzzer to push Richmond's lead to double-digits and end the first quarter up 22-10.
Freshman Sydney Boone kept the offense rolling with a pair of threes in the first minute of the second quarter to extend Richmond's lead to 28-15. The Spiders later went on another double-digit scoring run, 12-0, spanning 4:25. That run was capped by threes from Siobhan Ryan and Addie Budnik to extend the lead to 30, and Richmond went into halftime ahead 49-23.
Emma Squires opened the scoring in the third with a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws to make it 54-23 at 8:32. Klimkiewicz and Ryan then combined for an 11-3 Richmond run to extend the lead to 65-28 with 5:40 to go, and the third frame was closed out by three straight Richmond triples by three different players. Aniyah Carpenter, Kylee Lewandowski, and Budnik all hit a three to give Richmond a 79-33 lead heading into the final frame.
The 3-pointers kept coming for the Spiders as Boone hit her third of the night followed by Claire Holt's first of the night with 3:39 to go in the game. The dominating win was capped off by layups from Molly Mraz and Lewandowski in the closing minutes.
