Budnik, Ryan Lead Spiders to 76-64 Win Over UMBC

RICHMOND, Va. – Sophomores Addie Budnik and Siobhan Ryan each put up 20+ points Sunday afternoon and the Spiders set a program record for blocks in a single game as Richmond defeated UMBC 76-64 at the Robins Center. With Richmond's first home win of the season, the Spiders improve to 2-2 on the year while UMBC drops to 1-3.
"It was great to get a win today. We've had a tough schedule here so far and had a couple games where things didn't necessarily go our way with shooting the basketball. Then we've had two games I thought we really shot the ball well. You don't always know where the points are going to come from and that can be stressful as a coach, but I think sometimes those are our best offenses," said head coach Aaron Roussell. "I thought we moved the ball spectacularly well today. I think we had 17 assists on 19 baskets in the first half, and 24 out of 28 baskets for the game. I thought we moved ourselves better which really opened up some things. Even when the ball wasn't moving, the player movement got us some wide open looks both against the zone and in the man. Especially early in the season, we have to tidy some things up, but I'm really pleased with the effort and intensity, and obviously I just thought we looked really good offensively today."
The Spiders went on an early 7-0 run in the game, and going into the first media timeout, held a 12-8 lead off five buckets with four assists from Grace Townsend. Ryan lit things up with four straight 3-pointers spanning less than three minutes to give Richmond a 24-11 lead with 1:24 to go in the opening frame. UMBC got a bucket back at the end of the quarter, but Richmond still led 24-13 as all nine buckets in the first quarter were assisted and Ryan had already tied her previous career-high of 16 points after the first 10 minutes.
Kate Klimkiewicz drained a triple of her own in the first minute of the second quarter, and with 6:58 to go, Townsend swiped a pass and took it all the way in for a layup to make it 33-16 in favor of Richmond. The Spiders hit three more treys in the final three minutes of the second quarter to head into halftime with a 49-31 lead.
Ryan opened the third period with her fifth 3-pointer of the game, but then the Spiders went cold on the floor while UMBC went on a 9-0 run to force a Richmond timeout. The Spiders came out of that timeout with a turnaround jumper from Emma Squires, and the two teams exchanged baskets until the end of the frame when Richmond led 64-51.
The Spiders did not score in the fourth quarter until the 5:17 mark when Ryan hit her sixth and final 3-pointer of the day to return Richmond's lead to double-digits, and the lead did not drop below double-digits the rest of the game.
