FARMVILLE, Va. – Four Spiders scored in double-figures Wednesday night, led by Siobhan Ryan with a career-high 24 points, as Richmond secured its second-straight win with an 83-70 road victory at Longwood. With the win, the Spiders improve to 6-4 on the season while Longwood falls to 3-7.
"It was good to get a road win. I've liked how we've played lately, and especially offensively today. We were hard to guard and got some easy baskets. We struggled handling Longwood's pressure, which we were worried about, but the times we did, we got some easy baskets and took advantage of it," said head coach Aaron Roussell.
Richmond jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first, but the two teams went back-and-forth as Longwood evened things up at 5-all before taking a 10-8 lead. Ryan answered with a layup before Katie Hill regained the lead for the Spiders, 12-10, with 4:17 to go in the frame. After being tied up at 15-15 with 1:50 remaining, Kate Klimkiewicz drilled a triple and layup in the final minute to give Richmond a 21-15 lead heading into the second. Ryan notched 11 points and three treys in the first to help the Spiders to the lead.
Early in the second, Claire Holt pushed the lead to 31-20 with a triple and a pair of free throws in a span of 30 seconds. Klimkiewicz later swiped a pass and took it all the way down for a layup to make it 33-25 at 4:04. The Spiders closed out the half with a triple from Sydney Boone and another bucket from Ryan to lead 40-29 going into the intermission.
Ryan picked up where she left off with a layup in the opening seconds of the second half to make it 42-29, and Cayla Williams opened up a 9-0 Richmond run with a triple at 7:00. Klimkiewicz and Budnik combined for six free throws in that run to make it 58-34 at 6:11. Longwood threatened with a 14-0 run spanning 2:53 to cut its deficit to 60-50, but Budnik ended that run with a layup at 1:38 to make it 62-50. Richmond still held the lead after the third, 66-55.
Back-to-back Spider threes in the fourth quarter from Ryan and Klimkiewicz extended Richmond's lead to 75-60 with 6:56 to go, but Longwood would come back within 10 points on a 6-0 run. Budnik and Williams responded with back-to-back layups to get back to a double-digit lead, and Emma Squires added a late layup for good measure to finish off the 83-70 win.
