Spiders Close 2021 with Fifth Straight Win
12/29/2021 | Women's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball squad closed out its nonconference slate Wednesday night with its fifth consecutive win, dominating Coppin State 90-50 at the Robins Center. Wednesday was the second time this season Richmond has won by 40 or more points, and the Spiders currently sit at 9-4 overall this season ahead of the start of conference play. Coppin State falls to 6-7 overall this season.
"I'm really proud of our kids and our effort today. I think we came into it maybe expecting a few different things from [Coppin State]. Having [Jaia] Alexander come back for them is a huge thing for their offense, and our kids adjusted really well. I also thought that was a really good defensive effort. We mixed up our defense a fair amount tonight, and I was really proud of the effort on the boards. I thought we limited them on their second chance points today. We really locked down the boards and all in all it was a really good effort," said head coach Aaron Roussell.
After being tied up at 7-7 at the 5:51 mark in the first, Emma squires drained a triple followed by an and-one from Addie Budnik to give Richmond a 13-7 lead, and the Spiders would never trail again in the contest. A triple from Claire Holt pushed the lead to double-digits at 21-11 with 1:30 to go in the opening frame, and Richmond led 25-14 at the end of the first.
The Spiders opened the second quarter up with a layup from Sydney Boone and a triple from Budnik, and a triple for Boone later pushed the lead to 33-16 at 8:20. Budnik drilled another one from deep to hit double figures and give the Spiders a 48-28 lead with 2:08 to go in the second, and Richmond led 52-30 at the half.
Kate Klimkiewicz snuck a quick layup off a feed from Budnik in the opening seconds of the third, and Klimkiewicz then put the Spiders up by 30 with a triple to force a CSU timeout at 1:56. Kylee Lewandowski hit a last-second layup to send the Spiders into the final frame with a 73-42 lead.
Back-to-back threes for Richmond in a span of 30 seconds made it 81-46 at 6:22 in the fourth, and the Spiders held the Eagles cold from the field the entire period while Molly Mraz closed the game out with a trey in the final minute.
