02/14/2021 | Men's Lacrosse
RICHMOND, Va. – The 16th ranked University of Richmond men's lacrosse program opened the 2021 season Sunday and suffered a hard-fought 8-7 overtime loss to visiting No. 10 Loyola at Robins Stadium. The Greyhounds scored the game's final three goals, including the game-winning goal just 1:01 into the first overtime period.
The game only saw six goals scored total in the first half before exploding for six alone in the fourth quarter and the six over the final 6:29 of action in the game. Sunday's game marks the first of at least four non-conference games scheduled against nationally ranked opponents this season. The Spiders return to action next Sunday hosting No. 2 North Carolina at Robins Stadium.
Freshman attack Luke Grayum (Ardmore, Pa.) made his collegiate debut and scored a pair of goals off the bench to lead the Spiders' offense. Senior Ryan Lanchbury (Oakville, Ontario) was held without a goal for the first time in 14 games, finishing the game with five shots and two assists. Graduate goalie Jack Rusbuldt (Richmond, Va.) tallied 12 saves in the loss.
The game started slowly with each team feeling the other out in the season opener. Sophomore Dalton Young (Chantilly, Va.) tied the game at the 7:30 minute of the first quarter with his first of the season. After Loyola took a 2-1 lead, the Spiders scored the next four goals of the game, including all three in the second quarter giving the Spiders a 5-2 lead just 45 seconds into the third quarter.
Sophomore Richie Connell (Evergreen, Colo.) scored on the man-up opportunity while Tyler Shoults (Warners, N.Y.) and Ryan Dunn (Towson, Md.) scored just 36 second apart. Grayum scored his first career collegiate goal early in the second half, tallying the teams' second man-up goal of the afternoon.
Loyola scored two straight to pull within one before Grayum added his second with 5:28 remaining in the game. The Greyhounds kept coming as Joey Kamish scored with 4:27 left before Mitch Savoca (Newtown, Conn.) answered back 25 seconds later giving the Spiders a 7-5 advantage with 4:02 remaining.
Loyola got three straight goals from Kevin Lindley, including the game-tying goal with 1:06 left in regulation and the game-winning goal 1:01 into the overtime period. The game was the first-ever meeting between the Spiders and the Greyhounds – the team head coach Dan Chemotti was an assistant with for five seasons prior to coming to Richmond.
