SAINT LOUIS, Mo. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team got 21 points from freshman Addie Budnik (Highland Park, Ill.) but their fourth quarter comeback fell short 62-57 at Saint Louis Sunday at Chaifetz Arena.
The Spiders fall to 10-6 overall and are 7-4 in the Atlantic 10 with their second-straight road loss. Budnik's 21 points was two off of her career high 23 set against William & Mary earlier in the season. Budnik also grabbed nine rebounds and had three blocks.
Richmond shot 33 percent from the field off 22-for-66 and went 11-for-35 from the three-point line. The Spiders really battled with rebounds only losing 45-42 to the Billikens. UR was 2-for-4 from the free throw line and Saint Louis was 12-for-17.
Junior Emma Squires (Kingston, Mass.) gave the Spiders a spark in the second quarter scoring a season-high 12 points. Freshman Grace Townsend (Midlothian, Va.) added eight points and four assists off the bench. Senior Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) had nine points off 3-for-5 from the three-point line and grabbed eight rebounds.
In the fourth quarter, Townsend drained a three-pointer to cut the Saint Louis lead down to 40-37. The Billikens answered with a jumper from Ciaja Harbison and freshman Siobhan Ryan (Buffalo, N.Y.) scored on a fast break to get within three at 42-39. Saint Louis built a 10-point lead in the final quarter but Richmond kept fighting after a 7-1 run capped by a Parson three-pointer made the score 50-46 with 4:42 remaining.
One last chance for Richmond came down 58-54 but the Spiders committed a turnover with 11 seconds left. Townsend made a late three-pointer and Harbison made two free throws with one second on the clock to make the final 62-57.
Richmond trailed 27-25 at halftime thanks to a solid second quarter from Squires, who scored 12 points in the quarter off a perfect 5-for-5 from the field. Squires set a personal A-10 scoring high with those 12 second-quarter points.
The Spiders only scored six points in the first quarter but held Saint Louis to just 11 points to stay close after one quarter. The Spiders shot just 21.4 percent in the opening quarter and was 0-for-6 from the three-point line. Budnik, Townsend and junior Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) provided the three baskets.
In the third quarter, Saint Louis managed to increase their lead after outscoring Richmond 13-9. The Billikens would answered by scoring six-straight points to regain the lead at 34-31 on a jumper from Brooke Flowers. Klimkiewicz hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 34-34 with 2:37 left in the third quarter. Saint Louis ended the quarter on a 6-0 run and held Richmond scoreless for the final 2:37.
