02/26/2021 | Women's Basketball
KINGSTON, RI. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team was outscored 23-9 in the fourth quarter and never recovered in a 70-56 road loss at Rhode Island Friday at the Thomas M. Ryan Center.
"We did a lot a good things for much of the game, but that fourth quarter was a tough one for us," head coach Aaron Roussell said. "We couldn't get stops and when we did, we couldn't finish it on the glass."
Junior Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) led the way with 16 points and six rebounds. Klimkiewicz was 4-for-9 from the three-point line and went 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Freshman Addie Budnik (Highland Park, Ill.) finished with eight points, six rebounds, four assists and three blocks. Freshman Siobhan Ryan (Buffalo, N.Y.) added nine points off the bench and junior Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.) scored eight points.
The Spiders (12-7, 9-5 A-10) drop the season-series to Rhode Island losing both games to the Rams. Rhode Island holds a one-game lead on the fourth seed for the upcoming Atlantic 10 Championships. Rhode Island outrebounded UR 37-31, including 14 from Emmanuelle Tahane who posted a double-double (16 points, 14 rebounds).
"Rhode Island is a very good team with a ton of talent," Roussell said. "They played very well tonight and scored well inside and out. We need to move past this one and find a way to regroup on Sunday."
Richmond was leading 46-37 with 3:54 remaining in the third quarter before Rhode Island went on a 10-1 run to close out the third quarter and enter the fourth quarter with a lot of momentum. Johanna Muzet tied the game at 47-47 with a fast break layup with 32 seconds left in the third.
Catherine Cairns opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back three-pointers to push Rhode Island ahead at 53-47. Senior Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) scored on a fast break layup to get within four at 53-49. Muzet drained a three-pointer off an offensive rebound by Marie-Paule Foppossi to go back up 56-49. The Spiders couldn't get any closer only scoring nine points in the final quarter.
In the final two quarters, Richmond shot 3-for-18 from the three-point line (16.7 percent) and Rhode Island finished 5-for-9 (55.6 percent) from downtown. The Rams used 12 offensive rebounds leading to 25 second chance points.

Senior Kailyn Fee (Vienna, Va.) scored six points in the second quarter off two three-pointers. Ryan and Budnik each scored five points apiece. Budnik continued her streak of a block in every game in the second quarter rejecting a three-point attempt from Catherine Cairns.
The Rams had built a 23-18 lead in the second quarter but the Spiders hit a couple of three-pointers to turn the deficit into their favor. Klimkiewicz cut the lead to 23-21 and Fee hit back-to-back three-pointers to give Richmond a 27-23 lead after a 9-0 run. Ryan made a layup inside with a minute left to give Richmond a 29-28 halftime lead.
