Richmond Looks To End A-10 Regular Season On High Note Versus UMass

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team will face UMass to conclude the Atlantic 10 regular season on Sunday, Feb. 28 at 4:30 inside the Thomas M. Ryan Center. The game will follow the contest between Rhode Island and VCU set to tip-off at 1 p.m.
SPIDERS CONCLUDE A-10 REGULAR SEASON AGAINST UMASS
The University of Richmond women's basketball team will face UMass in a neutral site contest at the Thomas M. Ryan Center in Rhode Island. UMass is unable to host events due to COVID safety protocols.
Both teams are coming off losses on Friday, Feb. 26. The Spiders had a nine-point lead in the third quarter against Rhode Island but the Rams ended the quarter on a 10-1 run to tie the game at 47-47. Rhode Island started the fourth quarter with back-to-back three-pointers and outscored UR, 23-7, to sweep the season series against the Spiders.
Junior Kate Klimkiewicz led the team with 16 points and six rebounds. Klimkiewicz hit four three-pointers and was 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Freshman Addie Budnik added eight points, six rebounds, four assists and three blocks. Freshman Siobhan Ryan scored nine points off the bench and Claire Holt had eight points and six rebounds.

UMass is 10-6 on the season and is 6-5 in Atlantic 10 games, having lost four games in a row. The Minutewomen started 6-1 in A-10 play before this losing streak. UMass fell just short against VCU on Feb. 26, 72-69 in their first game since Jan. 31 due to COVID safety protocols. Sam Breen had a chance to send the game into overtime but her three-pointer missed as time expired. Freshman Ber'Nyah Mayo scored a career-high 20 points on 8-for-12 shooting. Breen finished with 19 points and leads the team in scoring at 17.5 points per game. Sydney Taylor is second in scoring at 15.3 points per game and leads the team in three-pointers made with 36. Destiney Philoxy leads the team with 110 assists and third in scoring at 10.9.
HISTORY AGAINST UMASS
This will be the 26th all-time meeting between the two teams with Richmond leading the all-time series with a 20-5 record. UMass has won two-straight in the series. The two teams were supposed to meet on Sunday, Jan. 17 at the Robins Center on the CBS Sports Network but the game was postponed due to COVID protocols. Last season, UMass earned a 64-50 home win on Jan. 29, 2020 on the NBC Sports Network. The Minutewomen led wire-to-wire and scored 17 points in the fourth quarter to win going away. Kate Klimkiewicz had 15 points and Claire Holt scored 13 points. Sam Breen led all scorers with 26 points and eight rebounds. UMass hit 10 three-pointers in the win.
KLIMKIEWICZ MAKING CASE FOR A-10 ALL-CONFERENCE
Junior Kate Klimkiewicz leads the team in scoring at 13.5 points per game and is 10th in the Atlantic 10 in points per game. Her 38 three-pointers made is fifth-best in the A-10. Klimkiewicz has started all 19 games and is second on the team in rebounding at 6.5 rebounds per game. She is also fourth in the A-10 in steals with 32. Klimkiewicz has scored in double-figures in 16 of 19 games this season. She scored a career-high 25 points against Gardner Webb on Dec. 4 and an A-10 career-high 23 points against Saint Joseph's on Feb. 19. She has made 12 free throws in a row in her last three games.
SPIDERS LOCK DOWN FIELD GOAL DEFENSE
Richmond is third in the Atlantic 10 in field goal defensive holding teams to just 36.1 percent from the field. Only Dayton (34.8) and Saint Louis (34.8) have a better percentage defensively. The Spiders are 27th in the nation in field goal percentage defense. UR held La Salle to just 30.4 percent shooting from the field on Feb. 20 and Saint Joseph's to just 29.0 percent shooting on Feb. 19. In the last seven games (4-3), the Spiders have given up 65 points or more twice in a road loss at Dayton (72 points) and at Rhode Island (70 points).
