WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – University of Richmond sophomore Lindsey Frank (Gansevoort, N.Y.) was unstoppable Saturday as she led No. 18/19 women's lacrosse team with a career-high five goals on five shots, helping the Spiders to a 14-11 win over William & Mary at Busch Field.
Richmond, 2-1 on the season, jumped out to a two-goal advantage as Frank converted a player-up free position attempt and got an assist on her second goal by Arden Tierney (Port Washington, N.Y.). Junior Marina Miller (Wexford, Pa.) pushed the Spiders lead to 3-0 with one of her two goals of the game at 21:54.
William and Mary, falling to 0-2, scored two quick goals, but sophomore Kat Kelley (Collegeville, Pa.) scored her first goal as a Spider on a free position shot before Sam Geiersbach (West Babylon, N.Y.) tallied her first of two goals of the game to push Richmond's lead back to two goals, at 5-2.
The Tribe scored the last two goals of the first half to get within one, 5-4. Richmond held a first half advantage in shots (17-10), shots on goal (14-9), draw controls (9-2) and ground balls (10-9).
The second half was more of a back-and-forth affair as William & Mary opened the second half with two quick goals to tie and take the lead, 6-5. Madison Ostrick (Medford, N.Y.) got her first of three goals in the half at 23:50 to knot it back up.
The Tribe answered quickly, but again Ostrick returned the goal, this time with an assist from Miller. Freshman Ali Susskind (Bay Shore, N.Y.) scored her first collegiate goal to give the Spiders the lead before William & Mary converted a free position attempt to tie the game at 8-all.
Frank then scored three-straight goals, one assisted by Tierney, one free position and one unassisted, to catapult Richmond to a 11-8 lead. Miller added her second goal of day to give the Spiders a four-goal lead at the 7:24 mark.
The Tribe scored three more times, but Geiersbach's second goal and then Ostrick's third goal of the day with a 1:23 left in the game kept the Spiders with the upper hand to win 14-11.
Richmond goalie Megan Gianforte (Brielle, N.J.) (2-1) collected a season-high nine saves, allowed 11 goals and picked up two ground balls in the win.
Richmond returns to Robins Stadium Wednesday, March 3 to host Longwood. Opening draw is set for 3 p.m.
