Sixth-Seeded Spiders Ready For A-10 Championship; Face GW Thursday

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team, seeded sixth, will begin play in the Atlantic 10 Championship on Thursday, March 11 against No. 11 seed George Washington at 8 p.m. at the Siegel Center. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN plus with Robert Fish and Allison Gaskins on the call.
ABOUT GW
George Washington is 9-13 overall and finished 5-9 in A-10 play to earn the No. 11 seed. The Colonials are 5-1 in their last six games with their only loss coming against Fordham, 48-43, in a non-conference game last week on March 4. Freshman Ali Brigham earned All-Rookie Team honors after leading the team in scoring at 12.0 points per game and second in rebounding at 4.8 rebounds per game. Jasmine Whitney was named to the A-10 All-Defensive Team after leading the league in steals with 61. Whitney is second on the team in scoring at 8.4 points per game. Neila Luma is third at 8.2 points per game and first in rebounding at 6.3 rebounds per game. The Colonials are only shooting 24.8 percent from the three-point line and only average 55.9 points per game. GW is coming off a 62-56 win in the first round against No. 14 George Mason on March 10.
HISTORY AGAINST GEORGE WASHINGTON
This will be the 47th all-time meeting between the two teams with GW leading the all-time series with a 28-18 record. Richmond has won three-straight in the series, including both meetings this season and a postseason contest in the 2020 Atlantic 10 Championship on March 3, 2020, second-round game was hosted by George Washington. The Spiders previous meeting against GW was a 60-49 road win on Jan. 29, Addie Budnik led the team with 13 points, six rebounds and three blocks. Richmond used a strong fourth quarter outscoring GW, 19-10, to earn a trip to the A-10 Championship quarterfinals in a 57-49 road win. This would be the sixth meeting between the two teams since 2019.
BUDNIK NAMED A-10 ROOKIE OF THE YEAR & ALL-ROOKIE TEAM
Freshman Addie Budnik becomes the first-ever A-10 Rookie of the Year honoree in school history. Budnik joins Pam Bryant who was a Rookie of the Year award winner when the Spiders played in the CAA during the 1986-87 season. Budnik, a three-time A-10 Rookie of the Week selection, is second on the team in scoring at 11.8 points per game and third in rebounding at 5.0 rebounds per game. Budnik dominated on defense by leading the A-10 in blocks with 60, 13th in the nation and her 60 blocks is ranked second all-time in a single-season at Richmond. She scored in double-figures in 14 of 20 games and recorded a block in all 20 games.
KLIMKIEWICZ NAMED SECOND TEAM ALL-CONFERENCE
Junior Kate Klimkiewicz was named A-10 Second Team All-Conference on March 9 after leading the conference in three-pointers made with 44 on the season. Klimkiewicz was ninth in the league in scoring at 14.0 points per game. Klimkiewicz has started all 20 games and is second on the team in rebounding at 6.7 rebounds per game. She finished fifth in the A-10 in steals with 32. Klimkiewicz has scored in double-figures in 17 of 20 games this season. She scored a career-high 25 points against Gardner Webb on Dec. 4 and an A-10 career-high 23 points against Saint Joseph's on Feb. 19 and tied her career high with 23 points against UMass on Feb. 28.
RICHMOND LOOKING FOR FIRST A-10 CHAMPIONSHIP
The Spiders have been to the NCAA Tournament three times in the history of women's basketball. The first championship was in 1990 after winning the CAA Tournament and went back-to-back by winning the CAA Tournament against in 1991. The third appearance was an at-large bid in 2005 after finishing 24-7 and a loss in the semifinals of the A-10 Championship. UR has played in the A-10 title game once in 2009 falling to Charlotte, 59-54.
