Spiders Advance To A-10 Championship Quarterfinals In Overtime Thriller Against GW, 58-54

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team trailed by two points with under a minute left in overtime and found a way to comeback with a 58-54 overtime win against George Washington Thursday in the Atlantic 10 Championship at the Siegel Center. The Spiders advance to play the No. 3 seed Saint Louis Billikens on Friday, March 12 at 8p.m.
"I like the way we moved the ball against them in the first half," head coach Aaron Roussell said. "Don't worry about mistakes, just make plays. We made some big time plays in overtime and getting that three-point play from Emma was the play of the game. I am really proud of our effort and proud we get to play again tomorrow."
Richmond trailing by two points with 50 seconds remaining, junior Emma Squires (Kingston, Mass.) made a driving layup plus the foul to give the Spiders a 55-54 lead with 38 seconds remaining. Senior Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) came up with a steal and found Junior Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) who scored on a fast break layup to push Richmond's lead to 57-54. The Spiders got another defensive stop and Klimkiewicz hit one of two free throws at the line to make the final score 58-54.
UR outscored George Washington, 8-4, in overtime and went 4-for-5 from the free throw line. The Spiders forced four turnovers for GW in the extra session.
Squires led the team in scoring with 18 points, eight rebounds and was 5-for-8 from the field. Klimkiewicz posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Klimkiewicz went 2-for-3 from the three-point line. Junior Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.) added nine points and freshman Addie Budnik (Highland, Ill.) had eight points with eight rebounds.
The Spiders finished the game shooting 33.9 percent from the field and held George Washington to just 2-for-18 shooting from the three-point line. UR outrebounded George Washington 43.36 and came away with 12 steals. The Colonials were led by Mayowa Taiwo who posted a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Richmond built a 40-26 halftime lead after a strong second quarter outscoring GW, 22-12. The Spiders were 6-for-9 from the three-point line with Squires and Klimkiewicz going a perfect 4-for-4 in the first half. UR also managed to outrebounded GW, 23-10.
In the first quarter, Richmond held a 18-14 lead after Budnik scored six first-quarter points. Budnik went 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the first quarter. Squires came off the bench and added five points in the first quarter.
George Washington cut into the lead by outscoring the Spiders 12-8 in the third quarter. UR shot just 2-for-12 in the third quarter and 2-for-9 from the three-point line. The Colonials had five second chance points thanks to seven offensive rebounds in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Richmond only had two points and GW was able to come back from a 10-point deficit to tie the game. With 2:59 remaining, Budnik made a clutch basket to give Richmond a 50-45 lead but GW answered with a 5-0 run to tie the game at 50-50 with 1:40 remaining. The Colonials missed their chance to take the lead after a missed jumper by Luma with 21 seconds left. Holt had a three-point just miss at the buzzer.
The Spiders have won four-straight games against George Washington and a perfect 3-0 against them this season.
