Spiders Fall Short on the Road At Davidson, 2-0
03/11/2021 | Women's Soccer
DAVIDSON, N.C. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team gave up two late goals in the second half to fall short on the road at Davidson Thursday night at Alumni Stadium.
"Tonight's game was a midfield battle with both teams playing a 4-4-2," head coach Marty Beall said. "In the first half, we weren't very sharp with our passing and we weren't making good decisions once we broke their first line of defense. The second half I thought we did a much better job and created quite a few good chances but unfortunately, we couldn't finish them. Davidson scores on their only two shots of the half. That's the crazy part of soccer. Simply put, it all comes down to who finishes their opportunities."
The Spiders (0-2) were outshot 5-4 in the game but had four shots in the second half holding Davidson to just two attempts.
Graduate student Alyssa Walker (Centerville, Ohio) had a shot get blocked in the 89th minute. Sophomore Emma Kennedy (Blacksburg, Va.) had a shot go wide in the 76th minute. Freshman June Stevens (Newburyport, Mass.)
hit the post in the 73rd minute and Caitlin Sutton (Clifton, Va.) had a shot that was high in the 48th minute.
Davidson took the lead in the 78th minute after Sophia Caruso scored her first goal of the season. Five minutes later, the Wildcats scored again after a cross was headed in from Alexandra Menard.
In the first half, Richmond and Davidson played to a scoreless tie. The Spiders had an opportunity in the 26th minute as Molly Morgan (Upper Arlington, Ohio) sent a corner kick into the box but Davidson's keeper Mary Grace Bunch was able to snatch it out of the air.
The Wildcats finished with three corner kicks and three shots in the first half but none were on target.
Richmond will continue on the road with a crosstown matchup at VCU on Sunday, March 14 at 2 p.m.
