Richmond Earns 1-1 Tie In Double-Overtime At George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team dominated possession and outshot George Mason 18-3 in a 1-1 tie in double-overtime Thursday at George Mason Stadium.
"This afternoon our players had an excellent performance," head coach Marty Beall said. "We did so many great things offensively, creating 18 shots and 10 corners. On the defensive side, we really limited their attacks and only gave up three shots and two corners. Unfortunately, we just couldn't find the back of the net. I'm so proud of all of our players for the hard work they are putting into this program."
The Spiders trailed 1-0 before finding the equalizer in the 56th minute as senior Katie Tritt (Fredericksburg, Va.) found the back of the net off a deflection from a George Mason defender. Richmond controlled the game by continuing to put pressure on the Patriots' defense.
The Spiders (0-2-1) had chances in both overtime periods but couldn't find the game-winning goal. Sophomore Emma Kennedy (Blacksburg, Va.) took a shot in the 105th minute but it went wide. Kennedy and graduate student Alyssa Walker (Centerville, Ohio) each took a shot that was blocked in the final minutes of the second overtime.
In the first overtime, Walker had a shot inside the box but it went left of the net in the 93rd minute. Richmond had three corner kicks in the overtimes but couldn't convert.
After scoring the tying goal, Richmond kept pushing forward as Kennedy had a chance that went off target in the 59th minute. Two minutes later, freshman Hannah Antonick (Virginia Beach, Va.) took a shot on frame but Mason keeper Louisa Moser made the stop.
Tritt almost scored her second goal of the game in the 84th minute after a cross came into the box and her header shot went just high. The Spiders outshot the Patriots 9-1 in the second half and only gave up one shot defensively. Starting goalkeeper Claire Hinkle (Tipp City, Ohio) only allowed one goal in 110 minutes of play, not recording a save.
The Spiders started the game aggressively getting two corners kicks in the first five minutes of the game. In the 9th minute, Tritt had a shot on goal but George Mason keeper Louisa Moser was able to punch the ball over the net.
One minute later, the Patriots scored after Katie Saunders found Kayla Hamric to make it 1-0. It was Hamric's first goal of the season.
Senior TJ Anderson (Peachtree Corners, Ga.) had two shots with one being blocked in the first half. In the 37th minute, Tritt made a run and was on a breakaway but Mason keeper Moser made the save. The Spiders outshot the Patriots, 5-2 and had six corner kicks in the first half.
Tritt led the team with four shots, including three on goal. Kennedy also had four shots and Anderson finished with three shots. The Spiders lead the Atlantic 10 in corner kicks per game, securing 10 against George Mason.
Richmond will have 10 days off before heading to Washington, D.C. for a rematch against George Washington on Sunday, March 28 at 3 p.m.
