Richmond Soccer Earns Shutout Win At George Washington, 2-0
03/28/2021 | Women's Soccer
WASHINGTON, D.C – The University of Richmond women's soccer team avenged their season-opening loss to George Washington by earning a tough 2-0 shutout win Sunday at GW Soccer Field. The Spiders snapped an eight-game losing streak to GW marking the first road win against the Colonials since 2012, in a similar 2-0 road win.
"So incredibly proud of the grit this played with today," head coach Marty Beall said. "GW is an excellent and well coached team and is extremely difficult to beat at their place. Our team defending was absolutely fantastic. Full credit goes to our players for their flexibility to make in-game adjustments today. We will enjoy this win tonight and get back to work tomorrow in preparation for four games in eight days."
Junior goalkeeper Claire Hinkle (Tipp City, Ohio) finished with a career-high 10 saves, earning her second career shutout as a Spider. Richmond was outshot 15-9 in the game and each team came away with six corner kicks. Graduate student Alyssa Walker (Centerville, Ohio) led the team with three shots.
Senior TJ Anderson (Peachtree Corners, Ga.) gave UR the lead just two minutes into the game and junior Molly Morgan (Upper Arlington, Ohio) added an insurance goal in the second half. Morgan gave the Spiders a 2-0 lead in the 71st minute scoring off a corner kick.
Richmond's defense had a stellar game holding the Colonials scoreless for just the second time all season. The Spiders back line of Morgan, sophomore Gianna Lucchesi (Hamilton, N.J.), sophomore Catie Groves (Denver, Co.) and freshman Casey Merz (Kensington, Md.) along with reserve defender Evyn Magenbauer (Salem, Va.) all played key roles in the shutout. Lucchesi and Merz both played the full 90 minutes.
In the first half, Anderson gave the Spiders an early 1-0 lead after scoring two minutes into the game. Both teams finished the half with two corner kick opportunities apiece. The Spiders were outshot 7-5. Hinkle finished the first half with five saves.
The Colonials tried to come up with the equalizer but Hinkle came up with back-to-back saves in the seventh and eighth minute. Maria Pareja's shot was saved and Tori Minda's shot was also stopped by Hinkle. In the 12th minute, Walker had a chance for Richmond but her header shot was just wide. Walker had two more shots in the 18th minute but couldn't find the net.
GW had a chance in the 32nd minute as Pareja took a shot on goal but Hinkle made the save. Freshman June Stevens (Newburyport, Mass.) took a shot on goal in the 40th minute but Tamaki Machi made the save. The Colonials had two more shots on goal in the final five minutes of the half but Hinkle came up with two more saves.
In the second half, GW tried to tie the game at the 63rd minute mark as Natalie Silberman took a shot on net but Hinkle made the save. Richmond went up 2-0 and the Colonials tried to get back into the game in the 80th minute but were denied. GW had three chances off a corner kick but Hinkle made two saves in a minute span.
GW had another chance in the 85th minute as Beth Ellinport fired a shot on frame but Hinkle again was able to make the save. Less than a minute later, Sammy Neyman took a shot on goal but Hinkle made her 10th stop of the day.
Richmond will welcome Davidson on Thursday, April 1 at 3 p.m. at the President's Field at River Road.
