DAVIDSON, N.C. – University of Richmond sophomore Sutton Orndorff (Charlotte, N.C.) scored the game-winner in the third quarter to give the Spiders their first win of the spring 2021 season Saturday, 1-0, over Davidson at Belk Turf Field.
Â
"It was a gritty, team win today," head coach Jamie Montgomery said. "I am proud of how hard they worked as a team through 60 minutes of competitive hockey."
Â
The Spiders (1-1, 1-1 A-10) and the Wildcats (3-3, 1-1 A-10) were knotted at 0-0 through the first half. UR held the advantage in shots (5-4) and corners (6-2) as Richmond goalkeeper Erika Latta (Midlothian, Va.) and Davidson's netminder both tallied two saves each.
Â
Orndorff's goal came just 55 seconds after the start of the third quarter, putting in a shot near post past Davidson's goalkeeper for her first goal of the season. This was Orndorff's second career goal.
Â
Latta, collecting her first shutout, made three more saves in the game, one save in the third quarter and two more in the fourth to keep the Davidson offense at bay, despite the Wildcats pulling their goalkeeper for the last three minutes of the contest.
Â
Along with Orndorff, sophomore Regan McCrossan (Waxhaw, N.C.) and freshman Olivia De Cain (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) tallied the Spiders three shots on goal.
Â
Richmond finished with the advantage in corners (8-4), while Davidson held the advantage in shots and shots on goal, 10-9 and 5-3.
Â
The Spiders return to action Friday, March 26, to take on Saint Louis at 3 p.m. at Crenshaw Field.
