Swimming and Diving Finishes Competition at the Mason Invitational

FAIRFAX, Va. – Spider swimming and diving completed its two-day meet at the George Mason Invitational Saturday afternoon. With no team scores being kept, the Spiders still set several personal bests and season bests throughout the invitational.
There were 16 events held at the invitational on Saturday afternoon. Several were with fewer than five competitors as teams were attempting to achieve times to set up seedings later this spring. Richmond had 11 first place finishes. Ainsley Everett (The Woodlands, Texas) took first in the 200 IM (2:09.74), Alexa Connors (Kingston, Mass.) in the 500 freestyle (5:03.26), Katelyn Pennell (Eden Prairie, Minn.) in the 100 backstroke (57.49), Maggie Purcell (Southampton, N.J.) in the 400 IM (4:26.60) and the 200 breaststroke (2:20.12), Claire O'Shaughnessy (Laurel, Md.) in the 200 freestyle (1:54.94) and the 100 butterfly (56.95), Emma Martin (Knoxville, Tenn.) in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.55), Megan Carson (Apex, N.C.) in the 1650 freestyle (17:31.38), Lauren Medlin (Cary, N.C.) in the 100 freestyle (51.71) and Grace Palfreyman (Bridgewater, N.J.) in the 200 freestyle (1:55.22).
Richmond had eight second place finishes as well. Mattie Williams (Lake George, N.Y.) notched a silver finish in the 200 IM (2:11.83), Medlin in the 50 freestyle (24.03), Ellie Ronan (Marblehead, Mass.) in the 100 backstroke (58.11), Palfreyman in the 400 IM (4:36.86), Lucy Yeomans (Athens, Ga.) in the 200 freestyle (1:55.66), Rachel Pak (Fairfax, Va.) in the 100 butterfly (58.52), Sara Greene (Tega Cay, S.C.) in the 200 breaststroke (2:20.83) and finally Everett in the 200 butterfly (2:07.18).
Rounding out several top five finishes include Martin taking third in the 200 IM (2:12.74), Pennell with a third-place finish in the 50 freestyle (25.07). Petra Mijic (Split, Croatia) in the 500 freestyle took third (5:19.67). Jenna Miller (Annapolis, Md.) and Medlin took third in the 400 IM (4:38.90) and the 100 butterfly (58.92), respectively. O'Shaughnessy added a 2:08.30 time to take third in the 200 butterfly.
Richmond took the third through fifth-best times in the 100 freestyle. Yeomans (54.07), Pennell (54.27) and Carson (54.37). Miller and Carastro took third and fourth, respectively in the 200 breaststroke with times of 2:25.53, and 2:29.22.
Williams was the only competitor in the 200 backstroke, finishing in 2:08.66, five seconds better than her seed time.
The divers each took third, fourth and fifth in the 1-meter and 3-meter events. In the 1-meter event, Alex Beran (Basking Ridge, N.J.) was third (218.10), Zazi Halla (McLean, Va.) was fourth (210.15) and Emma Yeakley finished fifth (196.98). In the 3-meter event, Halla took third (231.98), Beran fourth (229.80) and Yeakley fifth (198.98).
Spider swimming and diving is back in action in a week as they head to Villanova for a dual meet with the Wildcats on March 26th.
