Richmond Comeback Not Enough In 2-1 Loss Against Davidson
04/01/2021 | Women's Soccer
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team tied the game at 1-1 in the 76th minute but Davidson scored the game-winner in the 85th minute in a 2-1 loss Thursday at President's Field at River Road. Senior TJ Anderson (Peachtree Corners, Ga.) scored the tying goal in the second half.
"It was a great goal by TJ to tie game," head coach Marty Beall. "I thought we created enough chances to win the game and we were really good on defense. At the end of the day, we need to put the ball into the back of the net and we are struggling with that."
The Spiders (1-3-1) finished with 10 shots, including eight on goal, and held Davidson to just five shots. Richmond had four corners and the Wildcats only had three corners.
Graduate student Alyssa Walker (Centerville, Ohio) led the team with three shots and Anderson had two shots. Junior goalkeeper Claire Hinkle (Tipp City, Ohio) finished with two saves.
In the first half, Davidson took an early lead in the 16th minute after a pretty setup from Hailey Braemer found Rachel Schleicher who scored. It was the Wildcats only shot in the entire first half. Richmond finished the half with a 5-1 shot advantage.
In the 35th minute, Walker's header chance went off the left post and Davidson was able to clear it before Richmond could tie the game.
In the second half, the Spiders had a couple chances before a free kick from sophomore Molly Wierman (Sea Girt, N.J.) found Anderson who headed home the game-tying goal in the 76th minute.
The Wildcats' answered with the game-winning goal in the 85th minute as Sophia Caruso took a long shot from 30-plus yards away finding the back of the net.
The Spiders tried to tie the game again but didn't have enough time falling short in the end.
Richmond will remain at home and host crosstown rival VCU for Senior Day on Sunday, April 4 at 1 p.m.
