Swimming and Diving Falls in Dual at James Madison

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Richmond swimming and diving program took the whole team on the road for the first time in 2021 Saturday afternoon as the Spiders took on the James Madison Dukes in a dual meet in Harrisonburg. Despite having two events this season, this was the first time the divers and the swimmers were competing at the same meet this season. Richmond lost the dual by a tally of 182-117, but had several strong showings, including individual wins in five events.
Freshman Megan Carson (Apex, N.C.) earned Richmond's top time in the 1000 freestyle, swimming in 10:23.43. Alexa Connors (Kingston, Mass.) took home second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:53.59. Sara Greene (Tega Cay, S.C.) and Jenna Miller (Annapolis, Md.) finished second and third, respectively in the 100 breaststroke with times of 1:06.64 and 1:08.73.
The Spiders finished took three of the top four times in the 200-yard butterfly, led by a 2:09.10 time from freshman Ainsley Everett (The Woodlands, Texas). Emma Martin (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished at 2:09.54, and Maggie Purcell (Southampton, N.Y.) was right behind her with a 2:09.55 time.
Lauren Medlin (Cary, N.C.) added the top time in the 50 and 100 freestyles with times of 23.96 and 52.14, respectively. Purcell won the 200-yard breaststroke with a 2:21.09 finish. Greene took second to Purcell at 2:23.49. Connors and Carson added second and third place finishes in the 500 freestyle at 5:03.62 and 5:08.08, respectively.
Claire O'Shaughnessy (Laurel, Md.) turned in the top Spider time in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing third in 58.58. Purcell, Connors, Everett and Martin took home the top four times in the 400 IM, led by Purcell's 4:30.91.
The 400 freestyle relay team of Medlin, O'Shaughnessy, Grace Palfreyman (Bridgewater, N.J.) and Connors finished in second with a time of 3:36.72.
In the diving competition, Alex Beran (Basking Ridge, N.J.) brought in the top score for the Spiders on the 1-meter event. Beran earned a 240.45 mark, followed by Emma Yeakley (Cornelius, N.C.) who scored 220.75. Zazi Halla (McLean, Va.) finished with a 215.10 score.
In the 3-meter event, it was Halla who earned the top mark. The freshman scored a 242.10, followed by Yeakley at 229.90 and Bearn with a score of 195.90.
The Spiders are back in action March 19th-20th as they will head to George Mason for a two-day meet hosted by the Patriots.
