03/07/2021 | Women's Soccer
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team battled the Atlantic 10 preseason No. 2 George Washington Colonials for over 104 minutes but fell short in a 1-0 double-overtime loss Sunday at President's Field at River Road.
The Spiders fall to 0-1 in the season opener after a tough game against George Washington that featured 29 shots and 21 corner kicks. Richmond went toe-to-toe with George Washington (2-1) being outshot 16-15 but came away with 16 corner kick chances.
"I thought we played great today," head coach Marty Beall said. "It has been so long since we have competed but the team showed how much they have worked for the past year and a half. Alex Helbling came up with some great saves. There were so many positives to come away with from today's game."
In the second overtime, George Washington came out attacking as Maria Pareja took a shot that was heading into the net before Helbling was able to punch it away to keep the game tied at 0-0. Just four minutes later, Natalie Silberman made a run towards goal and fired a shot that was deflected into the left corner of the net to give GW a 1-0 win. It was Silberman's second goal of the season.
Graduate student Alyssa Walker (Centerville, Ohio) had four shots, including one on goal. Senior TJ Anderson (Peachtree Corners, Ga.) also finished with four shots, including two on net. Freshman Hannah Antonick (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Emma Kennedy (Blacksburg, Va.) each had two shots apiece.
In the first overtime, Richmond had a corner kick in the 95th minute and Alyssa Walker had a great chance in front of the net but GW's keeper was able to prevent a shot attempt.
Sophomore Alex Helbling (Highlands Ranch, Co.) made the start in goal and finished with six saves in 104:53. The Colonials Tamaki Machi finished with seven saves in the shutout win.
Both teams had chances in the first half but ended in a 0-0 tie at halftime. GW had six shots and Richmond finished with five. Senior Katie Tritt (Fredericksburg, Va.) took a shot on goal in the 27th minute but Machi made the save.
In the second half, Richmond was aggressive taking eight shots and held GW to just five. The Spiders also came away with 13 corner kicks in the second half but just couldn't find the back of the net. In the 66th minute, Walker had a couple of chances hitting the right post and getting another shot blocked inside the box. The Colonials had an opportunity late in the half but the clock ran out before getting a corner kick setup.
Richmond will head out on the road starting with Davidson on Thursday, March 11 at 6 p.m.
