Spiders Drop Road Game At VCU
04/06/2021 | Women's Soccer
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team held a 1-0 lead at halftime but VCU scored two goals in the second half to hold on to a 2-1 win Tuesday at Sports Backers Stadium.
"Unfortunately, we just didn't get the job done tonight," head coach Marty Beall said. "We got stretched too much defensively and gave up two goals on set pieces. You can't do that against a team like VCU and expect to win. One thing I did like is while we were missing three starters, we had some new players start and get significant minutes tonight and played really well. I'm proud that the girls fought until the end and created a couple of great opportunities to tie the game but unfortunately couldn't capitalize."
UR (1-4-1 A-10) finished with 11 shots and three corner kicks but only had three shots on goal. Graduate student Alyssa Walker (Centerville, Ohio) led the team with three shots, including one on goal. Junior Victoria Huxtable (Columbia, Md.) finished with two shots, including one on net.
In the second half, VCU tied the game just four minutes into the half in the 50th minute. Off a corner kick, Amber Diorio found the back of the net to even the score at 1-1.
In the 59th minute, Walker had a chance off the corner kick go off the post but VCU was able to clear it away. Just two minutes later, VCU was rewarded a free kick after a foul and Emma Kershner provided a bender into the upper 90 to give the Rams a 2-1 lead.
Senior TJ Anderson (Peachtree Corners, Ga.) took a shot that went high over the net in the 72nd minute off a free kick. VCU's goalkeeper Grace Young came up with two saves in the final nine minutes stopping Walker in the 82nd minute and Huxtable in the 87th minute.
Richmond took a 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to a goal from freshman June Stevens (Newburyport, Mass.), her first collegiate goal. In the 39th minute, Stevens fired a rebound off the initial shot from Huxtable and beat the keeper.
The Spiders were outshot 6-4 in the first half and only had one corner kick but were able to put away their chance. Junior Claire Hinkle (Tipp City, Ohio) finished with one save in the opening period. Hinkle made her only save in the 35th minute as VCU's Karen Lohrmann took a shot on goal.
Sophomore Caitlin Sutton (Clifton, Va.) and junior Evyn Magenbauer (Salem, Va.) each had a shot in the first half.
Richmond will host George Mason on Thursday, April 8 at 3 p.m. at President's Field at River Road. The Spiders will get a rematch against VCU on Saturday, April 10 at Noon at President's Field at River Road for finish the regular season.
