Swim and Dive Remains on Top of A-10 Championship Standings at the Conclusion of Day Three

GENEVA, Ohio – After the third day of competition in the Atlantic 10 Championship meet, the Spider swim and dive team remains on top of the standings after another highly productive day at both pools. Richmond has scored 467.5 for the top spot, followed by Duquesne at 394 and Davidson with a score of 374. During Friday's competitions, the Spiders had 18 competitors qualify for the finals in their respective events.
For the divers at George Mason, senior Alex Beran (Basking Ridge, N.Y.) qualified for the finals and earned a fifth-place finish for her efforts with a score of 255.05.
In Ohio, Maggie Purcell (Southampton, N.Y.) got the points started for the Spiders. The junior finished the 400 IM in third place with a time of 4:18.14. Freshman Emma Martin (Knoxville, Tenn.) brought in a sixth-place finish at 4:24.72. Jenna Miller (Annapolis, Md.) qualified for the consolation finals, finishing in 10th with a time of 4:26.11, setting a new personal record.
Sophomore Claire O'Shaughnessy (Laurel, Md.) led the charge in the 100 butterfly. The sophomore finished third with a time of 54.83, improving on her personal best and landing the fourth-best time in Spiders history. Freshman Ainsley Everett (The Woodlands, Texas) took home seventh place with a time of 56.08. Rachel Pak (Fairfax, Va.) added a point with a consolation final finish at 56.99.
In the 200 freestyle finals, a trio of Spiders earned a spot in the finals, with two more scoring in the consolation finals. Petra Mijic (Split, Croatia) finished 12th at 1:50.80 and Grace Palfreyman added a couple points with a 1:51.37 finish. Lauren Medlin (Cary, N.C.), Megan Carson (Apex, N.C.), and Alexa Connors (Kingston, Mass.) finished fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively. Medlin finished at 1:49.96, Carson 1:50.72 and Connors at 1:50.73.
Three more Spiders qualified for the finals in the 100 breaststroke. Miller and Jenna Carastro (Vineland, N.J.) competed in the consolation finals, with times of 1:04.83 and 1:05.06, for a 13th and 14th place finish, respectively. Sara Greene (Tega Cay, S.C.) took home a bronze medal after finishing with a time of 1:01.84 in the finals.
The 100 backstroke saw a new champion for the first time in four years with the departure of Hannah Gouger (Cockeysville, Md.) Freshman Katelyn Pennell (Eden Prairie, Minn.) finished in third with a 54.80 time. Ellie Ronan (Marblehead, Mass.) took fifth at 55.50. Sophomore Mattie Williams (Lake George, N.Y.) finished 12th at 56.67.
The 400 yard medley relay wrapped up the competition Friday night. The quartet of Pennell, Greene, O'Shaughnessy and Purcell finished in second with a time of 3:40.96, a tenth of a second off the top time.
The Atlantic 10 Championship finishes tomorrow. Preliminary rounds of the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and the 1650 freestyle at 8:30 a.m. The evening's finals will begin at 4:45 p.m., with the 400 freestyle relay ending the conference meet.
