RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Athletics Department presented its annual 2020-2021 Scholar Athlete Awards to 104 student-athletes Wednesday in the Millhiser Student-Athlete Development Center. With COVID-19 restrictions preventing the department from holding its annual Scholar Athlete Breakfast, the honorees enjoyed a visual tribute to their accomplishments while picking up their awards throughout the day. Scholar Athletes represent those student-athletes who carry a cumulative grade point average over 3.50 after a minimum of two completed academic terms.
"It is incredibly humbling to recognize so many student-athletes for their academic achievements," said Associate Athletic Director for Academics Bruce Matthews. "When we consider how these student-athletes could overcome the uncertainties surrounding COVID within such a challenging academic and athletic environment, their accomplishments become all the more remarkable."
Among the 104 recipients, senior Rachel Ziemba from women's lacrosse received the year's Top Scholar Athlete Award. Ziemba is majoring in Biology with a minor in Latin American, Latino & Iberian Studies from the School of Arts & Sciences.
The Athletics Department also honored three senior student-athletes that performed at the top of their respective schools of study. Men's golf student-athlete Michael Baker was honored with the Robins School of Business Award, women's cross country & track student-athlete Sallie Cook was honored with the School of Arts & Sciences Award, while women's lacrosse student-athlete Mekenzie Montgomery was honor with the Jepson School of Leadership Studies Award.
The men's golf team took home the Men's Team Academic Award for a second straight year as the men's team with the highest combined GPA, while the women's field hockey team won the Women's Team Academic Award after posting the highest combined GPA among women's teams.
