Richmond Second Half Comeback Comes Up Short Against George Mason
04/08/2021 | Women's Soccer
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team scored in the 86th minute but came up short in a 2-1 loss against George Mason Thursday afternoon at President's Field at River Road. The Spiders played short-handed down five starters.
"I love how we responded at halftime," head coach Marty Beall said. "I thought we started a little bit slow but in the second half we were fantastic. We defended great after not allowing a single shot in that second half. I am gutted for my team because I feel we are doing enough to win these games. It is hard to see them not get the results they deserve."
In the second half, Richmond (1-5-1 A-10) was much more aggressive taking seven shots and held George Mason to zero attempts. The Spiders also came away with four corner kick chances and held the Patriots to just two corners.
In the 79th minute, freshman Lauren Waniel (Clifton, Va.) fired a shot that hit the cross bar and three minutes earlier Nora Santelli (Shaker Heights, Ohio) had a breakaway chance go just wide of the net.
The Spiders broke through after Molly Wierman (Sea Girt, N.J.) dribbled down the right side and placed a perfect cross inside the box where graduate student Alyssa Walker (Centerville, Ohio) buried it into the back of the net. It was Walker's first goal of the season and gave Wierman her second assist of the year.
Richmond kept battling in the final four minutes but couldn't find the equalizer.
George Mason built a two-goal lead in the first half after taking an early 1-0 lead in the 10th minute as Katie Saunders found Dacheka Kolcum who fired a shot into the goal. Just seven minutes later, Linda Dirnberger crossed a ball into the box and Sara Chontoosh headed home a goal to give George Mason a 2-0 lead.
UR settled in and created a couple chances but wasn't able to score in the first half. Senior TJ Anderson (Peachtree Corners, Ga.) had a shot hit the right post in the 32nd minute and Alyssa Hendricks (Grimes, Iowa) had a shot go just high over the net.
Richmond will finish the regular season with a rematch against cross-town rival VCU on Saturday, April 10 at Noon at President's Field at River Road.
