CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Freshman Rory Weinfurther never trailed in her match vs NC State's Natalie Ambruester Wednesday, posting a 2&1 win to provide Richmond's only point in a 4-1 loss to NC State on the final day of the Cavalier Match Play at Birdwood Golf Course. Richmond finished the event with an 0-3 record, placing eighth in an eight-team field consisting of some of the nation's top programs.
Weinfurther grabbed the lead in her match after winning holes 5 and 6 with pars. She moved to 3 Up with a par on the difficult par-4 14th hole and wrapped up the match with a par on the 17th green. Junior Naomi Mitchell dropped her match to NC State's Inja Fric 3&2, while sophomores Muskan Uppal and Vicky Zhu and junior Emily Ward each lost their matches by a score of 5&4.
"We didn't score poorly," said Richmond coach Calle Barlow, reflecting on the team's performance in an event that consisted of six ACC teams, one Big Ten team, and the Spiders. "We need to work on our putting but I saw lots of really good things in our matches and I think our team learned a lot!"
On Tuesday, Richmond faced off against Duke, the nation's second-ranked team, and Louisville, currently 48th in the Golfstat Women's Team Rankings.
Richmond's next competition is the Patriot League Championship, which will be held at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa. on April 24-25. Richmond has won the event three times, earning Patriot League titles in 2016, 2017, and 2018.
